Did you participate in the ice bucket challenge? In 2014, so many individuals participated in the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness. People wanted to experience, if just for a second, the “feeling” of having ALS. Friends challenged each other, they laughed, they made YouTube compilations of buckets dropped on people’s heads, they donated and they moved on with their lives. It was a lot of fun and games, many laughs, and it all went to awareness and the fight against ALS. On August 24th at 8:24 PM, a day that will forever change my life, I did it too. I happily dumped ice water over my head. I never dreamt - in a million years - I would personally be afflicted with this incurable disease.
Coming from a lifestyle of being an athlete in every way, being the winner of the “NPC Southern States 2012 Mr Physique competition,” and along with my love and dedication to many years of training clients in proper nutrition, exercise, health and general health awareness, I, have now been diagnosed with ALS.
ALS is a disease that, as of right now, cannot be cured. It is considered 100% fatal, according to the ALS Association.
It has been a year and of half of suspecting that I have ALS, not knowing for sure, and definitely not wanting to accept it. My symptoms are now worsening, I cannot lift my arms from my sides and my legs are getting weak making walking a challenge. I get out of breath when I walk short a short distance. Think of all the things you do that require lifting your arms, greeting someone with a handshake, brushing your teeth, driving……… imagine you cannot use your arms?
What is not clearly seen are the personal financial costs that I, and my family are now burdened with, as are all families affected by ALS - costs that include the inability to earn income now and in years to come, and the costs of daily expenses, such as, skilled in-home therapy, nursing care, treatments, medicines, and medical supply costs.
I am asking for your help. PLEASE HELP ME in my hour of need. I trust God’s will and I pray the love of my friends and family will help me get through this.
