Fly me to Scotland
Hi everyone, I'm Will McLeod, an independent journalist in Washington DC. I've covered a number of stories over the years, including reporting from Zucotti Park during the Occupy movement.
My monday morning Netroots Radio spot went viral in Scotland.
You can download the full podcast here:
You can see the viral clip on youtube here:
And you can read the full, in-depth article here:
A number of people on Twitter have asked why I'm not reporting from Scotland.
The honest answer is that I'm unemployed. I like to call it self-employed or jobless because it makes me feel better, but the honest truth is that I'm unemployed. I'm okay though, this isn't a sob story. I have a roof over my head and I won't starve.
What this does mean is that while I'm independent media and do a lot of hard work, I don't have the funds to fly myself to Scotland, or get the expidited passport necessary to GO to Scotland, or get the mobile equipment that I'll need to report from Scotland.
$5000 should cover the price of Airfare ($900-1200), an expedited passport ($200-$250), an inexpensive laptop, because I can't exactly carry my desktop with me, ($400) food and transportation in Scotland, and other potential incidentals, like a pay-as-you-go phone in Scotland, or potentially a mobile hotspot to do live-streaming of events around Scotland, like we did in New York City during the occupy movement.
Now, if this doesn't come together, If for some reason my passport doesn't go through, or Bardarbunga closes down Air Travel between the US and Europe, or some other unforseen disaster, I'll be donating the balance to charity, as I wouldn't feel right profiting from this without doing the work people want me to do.
Thank you all so very much! I will be sending thank-you notes out!
Expect another announcement soon!
Banks have been dealt with, accounts have been linked, documents have been assembled, forms have been printed, letters have been obtained, and I am ready to go to the passport office.
But they won't see me til Monday, because expedited passports are obtained by appointment only.
I'm absolutely astonished that you have given a working class American like me this kind of opportunity. Thank you all so very, very much!
Hi Will Have you managed to come over to bonnie Scotland then??
The tension rises as German bank says world will go into a depression if Scotland votes for independence....seriously its front page news. The UK Gov are in meltdown and panic really is gripping the South as they realise that there is a very big possibility the union will be broken and that Scotland will vote YES.
Do you have a public Facebook Twitter account to see what you are up to?
Hi Will, keen to speak with you and set up an interview. Pm me and i can explain!
Happy you got your all your funding for your trip... Be safe !! :)
Glad you've overcome the first hurdle. Now get your butt over here... the next two weeks are going to be incredible. Trust me, after YES you may never go back to the States again... you'll be welcome in Scotland; the newest (and one of the oldest) country in Europe! #CallScotlandYourHome
I pray you get to Scotland and back a hundred times, God bless
Look for the play "In My Fathers Words" as well - there is a Macleod in that!
We could probably put you up in the caravan outside for a week if you get here but it is a bit of a blissful Highland back water -you'll be wanting to be in the big working class areas in Glasgow/ Edinburgh/ Dundee - read about John Maclean and James Connelly before you get here - They both did plenty in the states.
It's a privilege to be able to help out, Will! I hope you have a fantastic and successful visit in Scotland. Keep up the good work!
You are welcome. Remember to pack for mostly rain and the cold......lol and we use "British pounds" we also have a huge selection of western style foods.
Great to hear a truly unbiased piece of journalism...breath of fresh air. Also willing to offer accommodation and food. Just outside St.Andrews, 45 minutes to Edinburgh. All the best with your visit.
Will, thanks for your great work. Get yourself over here to Scotland. You will have no trouble finding people to help you in every way possible.

Excellent piece of journalism and I'm happy to donate. Why are we not hearing this from any of the mainstream press in the UK ?
Hi Will - I'm willing to donate a return flight Washington to UK. I have lots of frequent flyer points that need to be used anyway! Could book your flight this week :)
Hi Will, I'm wanting to give your report more balance & weight, to do that I need access to and the ability to 'Facebook publish' your other articles. I would really appreciate the opportunity to promote your journalism. So do you have a blogspot etc.?
Can I just add to my previous post by saying that I have just seen your "Letter from America" which appeared on the Wings over Scotland website in May of this year. I would suggest that you get in touch with the Rev Stuart Campbell to promote your funding campaign. It might be best to write via the Contact Us link because there are so many comments for each post that he cannot read everything. I do hope this suggestion helps and you are successful.
I will donate and also offer you food and accommodation for free in the beautiful County of Argyll. This is not exactly the hub of the Yes Campaign but maybe after the 19th you would like to do a "Roving Report "and see more of our lovely country. I will give you more information if you give me contact details.
