Dusty, Snakebite survivor

On March 21st, 2018, we returned from a movie date to find Dusty, our normally buoyant and rambunctious Rhodesian Ridgeback cross subdued, shaky with a strange gritty substance around his mouth. After investigating the backyard we came across a dead tiger snake, and to be honest, the rest is a fast forwarded blur of calling our vet at midnight to arrange meeting her, putting the snake in a Woolies bag, putting Dusty's and his brother Rasta in the back of my car and driving as fast as legally possible there.
When Dusty was tested, the results were worse and more frightening than we realised. His blood wouldn't clot, his muscles were necrotic. My baby was dying. We were terrified.
We had had pet insurance for three years of their lives without incident, and when I returned to school and my husband was out of work, we discontinued it, thinking we would turn it back on when our finances improved. We also turned off our own health insurance.
We had not yet reached the financial stability we felt was needed to commit to the $80 monthly fee, and with all the other care we give both our dogs, we believed that we could make it , unfortunately for us, a snake came into our backyard for the first time in the 2 years we've lived near the wetlands.
Dusty is a survivor. The snake bit him but he fought back. The vet and the nurses have all commented that he has such a calm and sweet demeanor, and that he has won them all over.
I'm proud of my baby. He's a gentleman. My family is not complete without him.
