7PM: Hula presentation by Durango’s Ka Pa Hula I Na Mauna
Suggested donation: $10-12
Hawaiian hula dance is practiced all over the world because of its gifts of beauty, important Hawaiian history, and storytelling. Our Durango practice group, Ka Pa Hula I Na Mauna, are Those Who Dance and Live Hula in the Mountains, within the ‘Pillars of Heaven’.
We are honored to travel to the Big Island, Hawaii in June of this year, to learn with Master Teacher Kumu Hope Keawe Mana'olana O Kohala, who has offered to serve as our cultural advisor, and leader for our Durango practice group. We are honored to join Kumu's dancers for a presentation in Kohala, where we are invited to dance for the community. Kohala is important for Ananda, our Alaka'i (teacher in training). This is where she lived and studied with Master Teacher Kumu Raylene Ha'alelea Kawaiae'a Lancaster . And Kohala is special to our co-founder Maile Kane, who was born and learned hula as a keiki (child) in this special place. After studying and presenting in Kohala, we will join Kumu and her dancers for ceremonial dances at the sacred site: Place of Refuge, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. https://www.nps.gov/puho/learn/historyculture/index.htm
It is common to request the support of one’s community for this kind of educational trip that allows dancers to share our learning with friends and family in our home community. We’re excited to offer this fun event to fund our educational and costume expenses.
Ho’ike Durango will be a rich evening of dance, song, talk-story and ALOHA spirit. Hope you'll come!
