Bring Ellie Home

$2,685 of $8,000 goal

We need help funding the medical transport as well as other expenses not covered for our daughter(Ellie) to move from KU Medical Center, Kansas to a hospital in Utah.  Below is a little background on her tragic Holiday event

Ellie Renae, our 18 year old daughter, was a senior in high school and, due to us being stationed at Hill AFB, she asked if she could spend her senior year in Missouri among the friends she grew up with.  We reluctantly agreed.  Ellie is an amzing girl with so much spirit.  She is a cheerleader, gymnast, track star, and artist.  A real inspiration to everyone who knows her.  She was thrilled to be on her own and so proud of her new apartment.  She was looking forward to our visit this Christmas and we were looking forward to seeing her and dropping off the truckload of furnishings she had helped pick out.  Instead, just days before we were to arrive, we received the phone call that changed everything.  Ellie had been found strangled and lifeless in her apartment and had been taken to KU Medical Center via life flight.  We had been visiting family in Minnesota and were able to pack up and make it to Kansas within 12-hours.  I am grateful we were back in the US after being overseas for the last four years making it possible to be by her side.

This is an ongoing case and we are blessed to have the Topeka police department working with us.  Ellie received rapid medical care and a ton of prayers that were instrumental in saving her life, but the road ahead is a long one.

Two weeks after being admitted to KU Medical Ellie made enough progress to be moved out of the ICU to a different part of the hospital.  She was off of the ventilator but still in a coma.

Now the difficult part, Dad (John) is still stationed at Hill AFB, Utah and the other kids (Kayleigh and Daniela) still need to attend school back in Utah so they arrived back home on 29 Dec.  Mom(Jennifer) remained in Kansas at Ellie’s Side fighting with the new Military Health care system that is determined to save money and just move her just 30 minutes away to Overland Park, Kansas  into a long term care facility that does not have a Specialist nearby for her specific recovery/care.  One of Ellie’s doctors mentioned there was a place in Salt Lake City that does have specialists that are already contracted to that facility in our Health Care Network.  They started setting up her room in the Salt Lake City hospital until the insurance company denied her transport but approved the medical facility/specialist referral.  The best part is that this new hospital is about 50 miles from our home here in Utah, not over 950 miles like Overland Park would be.   All this because they don’t deem it “medically necessary” to move her near her family where we can support her, especially when she wakes up from her coma. We are reaching out to as many agencies from Angle Medical Flight to other contracted medical transports that can reduce the estimated $18,000 down to a more manageable amount. The Hill AFB Medical Family Advocacy and our Medical Case Manager tried their best as well to get the move covered or reduced with no luck.  In the mean time, the KU Medical Center needed the space and rushed us during this whole event, putting a tremendous emotional and financial stress on the whole family.

Thanks to a generous loan we were able to fly Ellie home and she is getting the much needed care she desereves.  She is no longer in a coma but has recoved to a vegetative state with minimal consciousness and sleep wake cycles.  This bill was not covered and we have not even starting getting the medical bills.  I am sure the military medical provider will pay a majority of them but we have all experienced a few that for some reason are not covered. Help pray for a miracle and if you can help in any other way please do!!! Awesome update to post we were able to work with Angle Met Flight and get the cost down to about $8,000 out of our pocket. Of course they need all the money up front before they could book the flight but Jennifer’s Parents were able to dig up the payment and book the flight. I am excited to say as of 10pm tonight(Friday) our daughter has made it the SLC long-term hospital!!!! Now Mom can get some needed rest in her own bed once Ellie is settled in. Of course, I am sure it will be some time till she get a good nights rest but HUGE THANKS to all supporters that helped get her home!! We will still need to get some of the money back to her parents. Another big THANK YOU to GARY and the fMMOly community for getting the word out!!! Ellie is still in a coma so please counting to keep her in your prayers and thoughts
