Prefer Not To Say

Let’s start with our first question, the question we always begin with. What are the circumstances of our birth? Well, Riot Road was born in a quaint little pub called Retro, just off the Strand. It was a glorious sunny afternoon in June 2018, and as we sipped on our crisp white wine we dreamed of the day we would finally get the chance to have our say. To create work that not only inspired and challenged us, but also represents real-life people. We quickly realised that the best way to do this would be to open our doors and invite in everyday people, people just like you and I to have their voices heard. To create a platform where they could speak candidly and openly about their life and let it inspire others. We had no idea that this small little dream would quickly become a riotous reality in all the best ways. Since then we have been traveling the UK collecting testimonies and learning about the brave lives you have all lived. We have howled with laughter, and tears have been shed as we have absorbed many colourful tales.

We are now in the beginning stages of preparing our exciting new show Prefer Not To Say for the Edinburgh Fringe festival 2019. We are taking our show there for the duration of the festival where we will be performing at The Vault theatre. This beautifully intimate venue will provide the perfect location for all of the amazing testimonies we have documented, giving our audience an incite into the struggles that are faced daily within the LGBTQ+ community. As we journey through stories of contracting HIV, homelessness, abuse, and prejudice we gain an insight into the worlds of these brave real-life people. The piece explores myriad emotions as we listen to these important stories, offering up vital lessons and giving the LGBTQ+ movement a platform to not only feel supported, but represented. Through careful consideration the selected testimonies will be presented through a series of monologues that will be learnt word for word, utterance for utterance by our four actors. We aim to keep them as authentic as possible as it is integral to present a truthful depiction of the original documented material. Our actors will rehearse using the recorded material in order to encapsulate the true essence of the character. One of the central aims of the piece is to leave the viewer feeling empowered urging them to embrace all ways of life, no matter their sexual preference. We encourage people to attend with an open mind, and leave with an open heart.

The money we raise will all be used to fund our trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019. With Public Liability Insurance, Venue Hire, PRS Fees, Accommodation, Transport, Food, Marketing, Rehearsal Space, and Registration Fees just to name a few, we have estimated our budget at around £15,000. We have so far made £5,000 of this thanks to the wonderful support of the public, but there is still a long way to go! We are aiming to achieve this in order to have a successful run  and create a platform to raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ movement.

With the many amazing stories that we sadly can't use in the show, we have created a youtube channel where we will be uploading shorts each month. Check out our first one Sweaty Little Slut and subscribe to stay tuned for our next short, Worst Mistake Of My Life.
