AED Defibrillator for Drumcliffe

This fundraising campaign is being run by Drumcliffe Development Association, a community run organisation established in 1984. We hope to raise enough money to purchase an outdoor AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and provide life saving training for people in the locality.
In a cardiac arrest situation, early CPR and defibrillation are the most crucial factors which determine the
chances of a successful resuscitation. Defibrillation is the application of a high energy electric shock to the
chest of the victim using an AED in an attempt to restart the heart to pump blood to the organs.
According to the OHCAR 2011 research (Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Register),
14 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur every 24 hours in Ireland.
It has been estimated that for every minute that goes by without defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by about 10%. It has been shown that survival rates as high as 74% can be achieved if defibrillation using an AED is given within 3 minutes (Task Force on Sudden
Cardiac Death, 2006, Cormac Trust, 2012, Irish Heart Foundation, 2012). An AED strategically placed in a
community or commercial environment could prove to be extremely beneficial by increasing the chances of
survival.
Although Drumcliffe has a small residential population, it receives in excess 150,000 visitors every year. Most of these visitors would be of an older age profile and hence more prone to Heart Attacks.
Having an AED at the Tourist Office in Drumcliffe, which will be available 24hrs a day, 365 days a year, will dramatically increase the chances of survival if a local resident or visitor were to suffer a heart attack.
