Loyola, LSU, Tulane for Tibetan Med

Hello friends and family, (Tashi Delek in Tibetan language!)
We write to you from the Himalayas of Northern India where our team is engaged in a volunteer health care program for Tibetan refugees. Our group consists of students from LSU Medical School, the Loyola Nursing Program, Tulane University and our attending physician Shuchin Shukla MD who is a Tulane Med School alum from New Orleans.
Our base, Dharamsala, India is the settlement area to a large portion of the exiled Tibetan refugees and the home of the Dalai Lama. When many of us think of Tibet, we think of the country that was forcibly occupied in the 1950s; however, the situation has not become any less perilous or heartbreaking for Tibetans today. Their need for international support is no less acute--every day Tibetans risk their lives to brave the long, high-altitude journey across the Himalayas into India. Once here, Tibetans are faced with language and cultural barriers, and they also often lack the financial resources needed to receive adequate health care.
Our team has been providing medical, dental, and eye care screenings to Tibetan monks. We have found that over 50% of those we screen need to be referred to local clinics & hospitals to get the care they need. We have estimated that the total cost of services for all those we refer will be about $3330. We are hopeful that, with your help, we can raise these much needed funds.
The funds we raise will go towards covering the cost of health needs such as doctor visits, glasses, cavity and root canal fillings, emergency dental work, and Tuberculosis testing for the 250 Tibetan monks living within the monastery where we are working, most of which are children.
On average, cost of care in Northern India is as follows;
-Medical Referrals average $15 each which includes medication when needed
-Dental Referrals average $35 each and includes cleaning and dental work
-Referrals for eye care & glasses average $25 each and includes glasses
-Emergency care and less routine dental work can vary greatly in cost.
Besides the health screenings, we are also in the process of creating a medical filing system for the monastery where we are working. One of the public health issues here is the lack of an organized medical filing system, thus causing confusion and a lack of organized continuation of care. We are hopeful that the system we help to set up will be used as a model for other locations.
Please know that 100% of your donation will go directly to providing the medical, dental and eye care needs we are discovering. We can assure you that every cent will go directly towards the treatment of our patients; there are no overhead expenses or managerial costs, and we have personally paid for all our own travel costs. We are asking your help to provide these much needed services to those whose unending resilience and joy in the face of such adversity has taught us so much.
The opportunity to work hand in hand with the Tibetan people has been a very rewarding experience for us all. There is so much to learn from the Tibetan people, their ancient culture, and their profound wisdom for working with the mind. Please help bring awareness to their struggle.
