Dominican Republic House Fundraiser

The Dominican Republic is the perfect vacation with its turquoise waters, and its amazing beaches. Tourists often stay at luxury resorts and hotels there, and rarely go to the less fortunate parts of the country.

A few weeks ago, I went to the Dominican Republic with my school on a community service trip. We stayed near a village called Monte Coca which is one of the less fortunate areas in the country. It is a Batey, which is a sugar cane working village, and it is full of poverty. In 1998, Hurricane George hit the Caribbean, and Monte Coca was completely destroyed like most other villages in the Dominican Republic. They are still rebuilding from the hurricane, but the people in the village can’t afford to rebuild their homes. Instead they used scrap metal and wood to build structures that barely pass as homes.

The problem is that these homes aren't suitable to live in. The homes have dirt floors so when there is wind, dust gets into the air. When it rains, the floor turns into mud which is also bad. The roof and walls have many holes in them, so water leaks in. None of the houses have electricity, or running water. The sugar cane workers cut sugar cane all day, seven days a week with no days off. For all of the hard work they do, they get paid close to no money by the sugar cane companies. The families that are living in these villages are out of options, and they can’t afford to live somewhere else.

When I was on the service trip, we worked with a program called Ascala which is dedicated to helping out these villages by building more suitable homes for families to live in. I have always known that poverty exists, but I had never witnessed it with my own eyes and in this way. After seeing the conditions the families are living in, it has changed my perspective on life, and made me want to help out even more.

In the past decade, Ascala has rebuilt twelve homes, but there is still a lot more houses to be rebuilt. Ascala is only a small organization, so they have a limited amount of money and funding to build these homes. Each home cost 8,000 US dollars, and I am hoping to raise enough money to build another house for their community.

With your help, we can give families a better life, and a better home to live in. I hope you will help me by donating to this worthy cause. Thank you!

UPDATE: In order to deposit the donations, I have asked my father, Eric Karofsky, to deposit the money to Ascala.
