Dress Up For the Day is a 501c3 Nonprofit Organization.

I was inspired to create this organization by my dad who came to the United States alone in 1987, with one suitcase and only a hundred dollars in his wallet. A local church organization, although he wasn’t religious, gave him his first suit for his job interview as a janitor. Through his hard work and the generosity of strangers, I am very fortunate to be able to attend an amazing school and grow up in a household where acquiring basic needs like clothing is not a constant obstacle.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for millions of children across the globe. With this organization, we hope to de-stratify the effect of clothing on the social status of underprivileged children and teens by uplifting their self-esteem and helping them succeed in school, extracurriculars, and society with donated attires. What makes Dress Up For The Day special is that kids and teens get to choose what items they would like to receive, so they can feel the most confident in what they wear and how they want to express themselves. Not only does this help kids, but it also puts less of a financial burden on parents for clothing, so they can save money to afford other necessities like food, housing, and medicine. Additionally, since fashion is indeed the second highest cause of pollution in the world, we aim to reduce the negative effects on the environment from the industry. Instead of 26 billion pounds of textiles and clothing ending up in landfills each year, much of the clothing formerly gone to waste could be going to children in need.

Over spring break, when my family went to Shanghai, my brother and I visited a makeshift elementary and middle school for migrant workers’ children. These children could not go to public school due to their non-residential status. We gave them dresses and formal shirts that they chose, bought with our Chinese New Year red envelope money. With your support, we hope to help many more kids and teens!
