Last year, being 17 years old, I left my home, parents, and country for my passion for science. In search of better education, I applied and was lucky to gain a scholarship at United World College Maastricht, where I live in an international, diverse community. Here, I am engaging my school in my passion and raising the significance of women in science by organising a conference at my school with the collaboration of Maastricht University. It is especially important for me, as I have personally experienced the injustice, both from my peers and teachers, when I have persisted on reaching oncology-focused career. While fighting for equality, the attitude towards women is not the only obstacle in my way. As much as I can stand up for my rights and spread awareness, the financial aspect is an extreme hardship for my family.
Following my interest in enriching my experience in science industry, I applied to Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge and was awarded a place in a 2 weeks research project for youth in studying the paths of tumorigenesis in fruit flies, that would give me an insight into the oncology-focused scientific career I would like to pursue in the future. However, the entry fee cost is stopping me from reaching my dream and further developing to become an oncologist.
For 3 years now, I have also been trying to make science as clear and accessible for the local community as possible. Under mentoring of Science Centre in Warsaw and oncology professor, I conducted workshops about hematopoiesis in Warsaw Science Museum and about tumorigenesis on Science Picnic, Europe’s largest outdoor science-popularisation event. On top of that, I gave a speech about cancer cells and leukaemia at the Science Festival in Warsaw.
The programme in which I was awarded a place is very exclusive and gives limited time for covering the costs. My deadline for the deposit (500 out of 2500 euros) is 30th of April, therefore I would like to ask you for even the smallest contributions that would allow me to become an oncology scientist, which I have been dreaming of, for many years.
