Currently there are an estimated of 11.4 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, representing 1 out of 4 immigrants overall. Out of this 11.4 million undocumented immigrants, there are approximately 2.5 million undocumented youth which every year 80,000 of them become the age of 18. Out of those 80,000 undocumented youth, 65,000 graduate high school each year, 5-10% enroll into college, and only 1-3% percent graduate from college (United We Dream, 2014). According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), 2% of students enrolled in college are undocumented with most of them starting off at the community college (71.6%). From a 2015 article from the Texas Tribune and according to the THECB, TCC had the third highest enrollment of undocumented students in the State of Texas who pay in-state tuition (Texas Tribune, Ura, A. & Mccullogh, J. 2015).

There are several barriers that our DREAMERs encounter while in pursuit of their of higher education. Lack of financial assistance due to not being eligible to apply for financial aid or loans is the top barrier for our DREAMERs. Paying for tuition, books, transportation, immigration fees, and family obligations can be overwhelming for a student who does not qaulify for financial aid and/ or loans. There are some ways to fund their education but many are limited due to the allocations of funds and requirements.

Therefore, our goal as the TCC Chapter of the Texas Association of Chicano's in Higher Education (TACHE) is to raise $10,000 to provide scholarships for our DREAMER students at TCC.  Disbursment of scholarship funds will be at the begining of the Fall and Spring semesters.  All donations are tax deductible.
Your financial support will allow TCC-TACHE to help our DREAMERs make their DREAM a reality.
