Dream to Be

Dream to Be is a non-profit organization that was the idea of two sisters, Makenna and Tayler Murphy. Makenna is 19 years old and Tayler is 17 years old and they both live in Northern Ontario, Canada. The organization raises funds to help support young girls who do not have the means to register in hockey due to the high cost of entry to the sport. The organization will pay for first year registration fees and all equipment required for selected candidates to get their start in hockey.
The estimated cost per candidate is approximately $600 therefore our funding goal for this year is fairly modest at $2400. If more funds are raised above and beyond the goal it will be used to help more young girls enter the sport. Every dollar raised will be used to help others. All administration costs of the organization have already been paid by us with our own money that was earned from our summer jobs.
The inspiration for Dream to Be came us when visiting Better Beginnings, Better Futures Community Closet to drop off the hundreds of winter clothing articles they helped to collect during a winter clothing drive as part of Tayler’s hockey team Champions in the Community program. There they met a young girl who was approximately eight years old who immediately became mesmerized when she saw all of the female hockey players come to visit the program’s headquarters that day. The young girl and her mother were visiting Better Beginnings that day to volunteer their time for the weekly Spaghetti Dinner that the program serves each Saturday to members of the neighborhood who are not always fortunate enough to have a hot meal on their table. She and her mother were long time users of the Better Beginnings programs but felt it was necessary to give back to the program whenever and however possible. The young girl immediately turned to her mother when she saw the hockey team walk in the room and said with excitement “See mom, girls are allowed to play hockey!” Hockey and sports in general were probably a long distant option for this young girl and her mother as the money required to start playing is certainly a barrier to entry. We both felt that it was important that all individuals are provided with the great opportunities, life lessons and experiences that hockey has to offer. We have started this initiative in order to help as many young girls as possible to get their start in sport.
Any donations that are recieved will be greatly appreciated and all the money will be invested into enrolling as many young girls as possible into hockey this year and for many years to come!
