Hi, I am Peter Lau, I have been an operational fire fighter in the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service for 25 years.
in April I was involved in a serious cycling accident that resulted in I being left a paraplegic. Prior to my accident I was into many different sports including mountain and road cycling, motor biking, kayaking and scuba diving.
Sport and participating in such activities was a big part of Deb's and my life.
Life following my injury has offered a whole new set of challenges based around everyday activities. Activities that I as a fully functioning person never gave a second thought to. Such as dressing, bathing and just trying to function as independent as I can. Life has many challenges that I am convinced I will master, allowing me to enjoy life with my fabulous family and friends.
i have to admit on seeing people in wheelchairs I thought how sad that they couldn't walk. In truth not walking is only half of the problems I now realise they / we have to deal with. Problems and issues that reach out to everyone close to the person injured.
Since being injured a few people have asked me to set up a personal donation page. So people can organise fund raisers to assist me to buy me a number of items inc a high spec wheelchair, a hand bike and contribute to the many adaptions our home will require. A light weight chair costs thousands but will be far lighter than the one provided by Wheelchair Services. Having a lighter chair will help save the wear and tear on my shoulders thus enabling me to remain independant for longer.
This is so very humbling for Deb and I, as we have never before needed or agreed to accept anyone's help. I now fully understand just how much life is going to change, how much expense we are facing in having to sell our house- buy then adapt our new home for a wheelchair user.
Many people have asked for us to set up such a site so that they can give support which is so generous.
Amazingley so many lovely people have raised £4000 which will pay for a top quality light weight wheelchair. This has now been ordered. I should get this delivered in a few weeks time. I can not thank you all enough for the freedom this chair will give me.
We have recently completed the purchase of a bungalow in Huddersfield, a house that will be far more suitable for a wheelchair.
The number of adaptions needed are not too bad, a wet room and a double sided ramp. Although were a little surprised at the quoted costs of these.
To facilitate this I have increased the target of my campaign to £8000
This will assist us to pay for the required modifications required.
