DownSense - the Down Syndrome knowledge base

3.000.000 families need your help, because  together we can create a unique one-stop  Down Syndrome knowledge resource. DownSense will be the first of its kind, comprehensive and different to the existing online platforms.

We are raising funds for an e-learning project, an interactive concept to share knowledge and empower all those who support learners with #DownSyndrome .

MAKING SENSE OF DOWN SYNDROME FOR PARENTS,  EDUCATORS, LEARNERS AND FRIENDS

Imagine if you could join an enormous knowledge database; if you could access a video library of Down syndrome experts in action; or take an online course or consult real professionals and experienced parents to answer your questions.

DownSense  will  give you practical advice from your desktop, tablet or smartphone.

WHO IS PART OF THE PROJECT?

We are a dedicated group of highly passionate educators, therapy professionals and parents who have joined to launch the ambitious project, DownSense. We have more than a decade of shared experience working together ( Early Impact programme  Germany/South Africa). Over the years we have extended our expert group and network with NGOs and experts all over the world:  quite a strong community of experts in the field of education for children with Down syndrome.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT ?

DownSense should be the ONE-STOP knowledge base for parents, educators and friends of people with Down Syndrome.

WHO WILL SHARE KNOWLEDGE?

You could be a NGO, a NPO representative, medical professional or a therapist. We need your skills to help support our online community worldwide. You can make a vital contribution to the lives of many. You can become a co-author and/or instructor at DownSense. We create a technical framework with the campaign to make it possible.

BACKGROUND

Currently, there is no single one-stop online knowledge resource for families, relatives and friends or educators blessed to have a child with Down syndrome in their lives. We have a very ambitious plan to change that.

Of course the web is full of resources, but we know - from experience - that it is difficult to find a trusted source which consolidates the best research and most efficient learning techniques, hands-on tips & tricks… DownSense will be that one-stop resource.

DownSense - that´s how it will look like ...

Sneak Preview

FACTS

Each and every year 1 in every 1000 children born worldwide are born with the genetic disorder, an extra chromosome (trisomy 21), called Down syndrome. It is estimated that currently 3.000.000 families include a child with Down syndrome.

So there is a great need and large potential audience for DownSense , especially as it is widely accepted that in the child’s first years of development and early school age appropriate intervention and support is critical.

DownSense - makes sense.

WHAT IS  DIFFERENT

DownSense is an e-learning concept and interactive community that will empower ALL.  An independent, concentrated knowledge base. It will even integrate and link to established and relevant resources but use the accumulated research and experience to guide you through to the right information as you need it.

THE FIRST STEPS

Seed capital has been secured already to work on the e-initial development of the website and crowdfunding appeal.  A successful crowdfunding appeal here will enable us to start the technical build of e-learning platform.

THE TIME IS RIGHT

The 21st March is the annual World Down syndrome Day  when organisations throughout the world support and celebrate the developments being made with regard to opportunities for people with Down syndrome globally. It is therefore the ideal day to kickstart the crowdfunding campaign DownSense, a  new unique interactive knowledge & community platform. It will be the first of its kind, a one-stop resource for all.

WHY ARE WE DOING IT?

We would like to share that knowledge with ALL. We would like to create an unique knowledge database, share our expertise  and our experience. We would like to provide an easy to use e-learning tool. We would like the knowledge to remain independent and constantly growing. We think that makes sense - for everybody involved with educating children with Down syndrome.

ABOUT THE INITIATORS

My name is Marc Köbler, i’m a passionate Dad, one of the founding member of a Down Syndrome NGO.  I am a journalist and filmmaker and turned over the years into a supporter and coach for parents and schools.

We are proud parents of three wonderful children, Lucas, Leonie and Lenja.  My wife Tanja and I  have been actively progressing our daughter’s educational development from the moment Leonie was born, and as such have been directly  involved with early intervention and inclusive education for over decade. Our middle daughter Leonie is 11 and has Down syndrome. Over the years, we have learned a lot as parents, as founding members and directors of a Down Syndrome Inclusive Education Foundation ; and as the initiator programme leader of a fully inclusive education project. In 2010 we initiated the Early Impact programme   for inclusive education for children with DS in a mainstream pre-primary school  , with the support of the school, staff and together with therapy professionals.
