MONIQUE
Meet Monique.  She is a 31 year old Haitian woman living with HIV.  She was born and raised in Haiti's rugged central plateau where there is limited access to sanitation, schools and employment. She used to live in a mud house with 6 other people and slept on a dirt floor with her daughter, Esterline.  When we first met Monique in the hospital, she was quite frail and she could not work.  She received HIV medication for free. However, she was not able to tolerate her medication because she could not afford food.

Using Partners In Health's accompagnateur model, we provided regularly scheduled meals, consistent shelter and directly observed HIV medication therapy.  6 weeks later, Monique was able to get up and dress herself.  She is now ready to work. The hope is that she will soon take sewing classes from another local Haitian in order to learn to make her own clothing and products.

MONIQUE AFTER WITH ESTERLINE:

ESTERLINE
Monique has an 11 year old daughter, Esterline. Before we met their family, Esterline was Monique's main caretaker, finding food, bringing medications, and guiding her to and from the hospital. She could not go to school because they could not afford school fees.  She is now happily in school. Esterline is just now learning the alphabet and is an incredibly fast learner. She has a tutor and studies every day.

WHAT WE HAVE
The town of Mirebalais has an amazing, new 300-bed hospital funded by Partners in Health and the Ministry of Health. It is clearly filling a huge void for people who previously had limited access to health care. It offers primary care services to about 185,000 people in Mirebalais and two nearby communities. It offers care for all specialties including internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, ob/gyn, TB/HIV, orthopedics and much more. The hospital is completely free for all patients. There is a robust HIV/TB program already in place but it is in desperate need of more resources. The strong community regularly comes together in times of need.

WHAT WE NEED
There are thousands of other Monique's and Esterline's in our HIV/TB program with dire needs. This amount of money will be transformative for the entire community. Not only will the HIV/TB patient's directly benefit but the funds will predominantly use direct local resources.  For example, we often pay Magda, the lady up the street, to make delicious egg sandwiches for our patients. This may eventually allow Magda to save enough money to send her own 4 kids to school.

Dovetail's goal, in addition to access to medical care, is to provide emergency social services, regular supplies of food, clean water, clothing, and housing to the most vulnerable patients and families living with Tuberculosis and/or HIV.

100% of your donations will benefit the people of Mirebalais directly.

With sustainability in mind, our ultimate goal is to set up an income generation cooperative (a sewing collective) so patients can create and sell their own products on a continuous basis.
