Doug and Debbie Swanson were two of the most remarkable people I have ever known. They touched countless lives with their wit and kindness. More than anyone else, they shaped my life and my sisters' lives and helped to grow us into the individuals we are today. They truly left behind a legacy of love. I could not ask for better parents.
One of their greatest legacies was the care and compassion they showed to my little sister Faith, whom they adopted when she was a baby. Faith suffers from fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and Doug and Debbie fought tirelessly to help her in her day-to-day struggles. They loved all three of us girls equally, but nowhere was their love more apparent than in the care they showed to Faith.
Their greatest legacy of all, however, was the faith they placed in God and the dedication they showed to the church. They taught my sisters and me about the tenets of our faith and taught us how to stand tall and be strong in what we believe. Their example continues to guide us as we move forward during this difficult time.
Laura, Faith, and I have decided that we would like to continue Mom and Dad's legacy by donating money to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (https://www.nofas.org/), the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (https://davethomasfoundation.org/), and St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson, Nebraska (712 Colorado Street, Culbertson, NE 69024). The memorial fund will be divided equally between these three organizations; if you prefer to donate to one over the others, please make the donation directly to the organization of your choice.
