Doodle's Emergency Surgery Fund

In true puppy form, Doodle enjoyed the finer inedibles in life and according to his former owner had a habit of eating whatever was handy. Fortunately in the past he was able to pass these various objects and bounce back to his old self.

Unfortunately, we saw Doodle, now 1 year old, on August 4th, a Friday afternoon.
He walked gingerly in to the exam room, head down, but with a wag of his tail, and laid down. According to Doodle's owner's he had been vomiting throughout the
week, had not eaten, and was exhibiting the same demeanor that we were
witnessing: that of a very sick young dog. His exam revealed severe dehydration, malnutrition and pain. And yet, he wagged when petted or talked to. He even wagged on his side while having an X-ray taken. The x-ray revealed a large rock lodged in Doodle’s intestines. We presented Doodle's owner's with the x-ray
result, and informed them that he would require emergency surgery,
which was not an option for Doodle's family. They faced a difficult decision and had to consider putting him to sleep. Doodle wagged on, as
if to say to us, "Come on, guys. Give me a chance. I got this" We offered to have the family sign Doodle over to us and within a few miraculous minutes we found a benefactor who would not only pay for his surgery but also adopt him. Doctor and staff stayed on late Friday night to do the surgery and be with Doodle as he awoke. We removed the large rock from his intestine, which required a resection and anastomosis (removing a section of intestine and suturing the two healthy sections together) due to the damage the rock had done while attempting to pass.

When Doodle awoke from surgery at 10pm he swallowed, and then the next thing he did was wag his tail. Still here guys, he was saying, still fighting. He was on fluids, pain meds and antibiotics and started to feel better over the next 24 hours. But two days after surgery, he developed a fever. With minimal staffing available on Sunday, we took Doodle to the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Deerfield, MA. There, a surgeon determined he needed another surgery and required a second intestinal repair. Doodle the fighter remains at VESH, still fighting. He has started to recover well from the second surgery but there is the possibility that he will need a third procedure. We are committing to seeing Doodle through and being by his side as he tries to get better.

We have comped all his costs at the Rockingham Veterinary Clinic - drugs, equipment, surgery, and donated staff and doctor time. But, we need help with his VESH bill which currently stands at about $7,800 but will increase quite a bit if he needs another surgery. His new owner has made a very generous contribution to his care, even knowing that his prognosis is guarded. We are willing to empty our Molly Fund that we use for stray and abandoned animals, but it still leaves us far short on the remaining balance. We are asking all you animal lovers out there to believe in Doodle and confirm for him - “We got this!”
