Donkey Welfare Symposium

Donation protected
The Donkey Welfare Symposium, the premier meeting devoted to the science, welfare, and future of the donkey and is in its sixth year, it will be held at the University of California, Davis, on October 26,27, and 28.   This is the only meeting exclusively dedicated to furthering the welfare of donkeys world wide.
This is important because
throughout the world donkeys have been and remain a hard working partner to our own species.  Much of the development of early civilization,  was made possible by the domestication of the Nubian ass, the progenitor of the modern donkey, some 6,000 years ago.  Even now, in the hyper-technical 21st century, donkeys are critical to human survival, wherever rustic infrastructure and subsistence economies are the order of the day. This is particularly true for women and children in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and many parts of Latin America.  In particular Mexico, a rapidly developing country, still with a large rural population, is home to some 3 million donkeys or burros.  As in the rest of the world, without a donkey to transport water, firewood, and produce, the poorest members of rural Mexican communities must “carry the load” themselves. Further, certain crops, such as Agave (the basis of the large tequila industry which supports many thousands of farmers) are particularly dependent on donkey power, due peculiarities of harvest and cultivation.  Yet, many aid programs and government agencies ignore the value of these animals, seeing them as a quaint anachronism at best, and as an annoying impediment to “progress” at the worst.  The status of these animals and their often deplorable state of welfare in many parts of the world should be of serious humane concern to all people, but particularly for those of us in well resourced societies, with the ability to improve the donkey’s status and quality of life.  To make the Donkey Welfare Symposium available to the maximum number of people, we have always tried to keep our expenses low.  That is why we are asking you, through Goufndme to help raise money to support the travel of out speakers, many of whom are from poor countries in east and west Africa, the middle east, and south Asia.  These researchers, development workers, and veterinarians do not have the resources to travel to the USA for this meeting.  We will be highlighting these dedicated donkey lovers in the upcoming days are we open our campaign.  I hope you will help.  The knowledge dispersed and the plans made at the DWS directly aid donkeys around the world, from our own desert southwest to the brick kilns of India and Egypt. Please help.....
