Don Henkels Cancer and Son

Donation protected
My brother Don was diagnosed with colon cancer back in August 2013.  At the time, he was getting ready to celebrate his son's 2nd birthday.  Don immediately started on the radiation/chemotherapy path but the cancer showed no mercy and continued to take over his body.  Just last week (Feb 2015), it found it's way to his brain.

Throughout the past 1-1/2 years, Don has continued to live his life the best he could.  Although he continued his chemo appointments every two weeks in a hospital 2-1/2 hours from his home in north east Iowa, he did not let his cancer stop him from his life.  He continued to work his seasonal job on all days except those where he was getting chemo.  My brother is from the "old school" ... you work hard at your job no matter what!  His boss even said that Don worked harder than any young healthy kid.  That's Don ... that's how he rolls!

Don is a single dad with a 3 year old son that means the world to him.  I know that the love he has for this sweet boy is what has gotten him this far with his battle with cancer.  He is currently unemployed due to the seasonal nature of his job.  But, with the additional spread of his cancer, he doesn't know whether he will physically be able to do his job when it is time.  My hope in posting this entry, is that we can raise enough money for him so that he doesn't have to worry about his bills ... and he will just have time for him and his son to spend the time togethter.

My brother would never accept hand outs ... which is why it has taken me this long to get his approval to post to this sight.  But, he is also a realist ... he knows what the future holds for him and his only concern is that he can leave something for his son ... the something that he should have (and would have) been able to provide had it not been for the cancer that decided to enter his life.

Thank you so much for reading his story... on behalf of his sisters Anne Kamansky, Joan Eulberg, Rose Henkels and his brothers Frank Henkels and Jack Henkels.
