Don Henkels Cancer and Son

My brother Don was diagnosed with colon cancer back in August 2013.  At the time, he was getting ready to celebrate his son's 2nd birthday.  Don immediately started on the radiation/chemotherapy path but the cancer showed no mercy and continued to take over his body.  Just last week (Feb 2015), it found it's way to his brain.

Throughout the past 1-1/2 years, Don has continued to live his life the best he could.  Although he continued his chemo appointments every two weeks in a hospital 2-1/2 hours from his home in north east Iowa, he did not let his cancer stop him from his life.  He continued to work his seasonal job on all days except those where he was getting chemo.  My brother is from the "old school" ... you work hard at your job no matter what!  His boss even said that Don worked harder than any young healthy kid.  That's Don ... that's how he rolls!

Don is a single dad with a 3 year old son that means the world to him.  I know that the love he has for this sweet boy is what has gotten him this far with his battle with cancer.  He is currently unemployed due to the seasonal nature of his job.  But, with the additional spread of his cancer, he doesn't know whether he will physically be able to do his job when it is time.  My hope in posting this entry, is that we can raise enough money for him so that he doesn't have to worry about his bills ... and he will just have time for him and his son to spend the time togethter.

My brother would never accept hand outs ... which is why it has taken me this long to get his approval to post to this sight.  But, he is also a realist ... he knows what the future holds for him and his only concern is that he can leave something for his son ... the something that he should have (and would have) been able to provide had it not been for the cancer that decided to enter his life.

Thank you so much for reading his story... on behalf of his sisters Anne Kamansky, Joan Eulberg, Rose Henkels and his brothers Frank Henkels and Jack Henkels.

Our brother, Don, is no longer in pain. His amazing fight with this cancer battle will never be forgotten by us or anyone who knew him. His little boy, Dakota, was his world! Dakota was the reason that Don chose to fight this cancer with everything that he had ... and then some. Over the past month, Don's conversations would often lead to one concern... what is going to happen to my son, Dakota? We assured him that his son will always be raised knowing the love that his Daddy had for him ... knowing that it was because of this little boy that Don chose to fight as long as he possibly could fight. His determination throughout this battle will never be forgotten by us or anyone who knew him. We gave him our promise that he would be raised knowing his side of the family ... and we intend to keep that promise. We also promised that we would help to raise the money that he would need to start a future when he was "of age" and "ready to take on the world". It is with this desire that we ask that in lieu of flowers for the funeral, donations be made to this GoFundMe account or be paid to Central State Bank in Marquette, Iowa in the name of Dakota J. Henkels. We realize that this battle that Don has fought, is long from over. We now will watch a little boy grow up without his Daddy. We now will not get to see a brother that we loved so dearly, enjoy all the things he should be enjoying with his son. We have told Dakota that there are some people who are so sick that God chooses them to be his Angels. Daddy is now his Angel ... he will always be watching over him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 from 4-8 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before Mass time at the church on Tuesday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Knipper as the Celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Garnavillo, Iowa.

Per Don’s request, in lieu of flowers, he asked that an account be set up for Dakota’s future education fund. We are honoring his request by continuing to accept donations at www.gofundme.com/donhenkels for his son’s college education. You may also make donations to the Central State Bank (P.O. Box 9, Marquette, Iowa 52158) in care of Dakota J. Henkels.

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my brother has continued on his journey.. Leaving this world of lessons for the next.. At 8:30 am.. Iowa time. My little brother and sisters as well as our cousin have been at his side the past 48 hours. I am on my way to the airport.. It was the earliest flight I could get when I booked it a couple of days ago. Our older brother is also on his way home from New Orleans. All happens as it should. Don got to spend yesterday with his son.. Just "watching" him.. I'm sure saying his goodbyes to him the only way he could. Today would have been our momma's 83rd birthday.. She got one heck of a bday present... I know she was there with open arms... As was our dad and three other siblings. Thank you for your continued prayers..
