I volunteer at Wildwood Elementary in Wildwood, Florida. This is a very low income school. Abby is a very ill third grader at our school. Her hard working family has had to take Unpaid Family Medical Leave to take Abby for serious medical treatment. The counselor at the school has asked for help and support for this family and I am setting this account up to assist. The situation is urgent for this beautiful little girl.
If if anyone knows a specialist that can get this procedure done sooner than the 6 to 8 month wait list time, please advise. Apparently there are only five hospitals that can do this pediatric procedure.
I spoke with her mom on Wednesday. The disease is Pancreatitis (due to a genetic defect, PRSSI) and Gastroparesis. the doctors are suggesting a huge surgical procedure called TPIA (Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Autotransplantation). They remove her pancreas and spleen, and transplant the islet cells into the liver.
She has had acute pancreatitis attacks since she was very young and each attack causes more scarring and that has led to her current status where her main duct is blocked and she is malnourished. Pain is 9 on a scale from 1 - 10.
Today at noon she was scheduled to have a stent placed in a blocked duct - if successful that will buy them the time needed to get into one of the selected medical centers, and figure out insurance coverage.
The family has stress of daily expenses now, and upcoming medical expenses. They also have the grandfather living with them, as his wife just died this past year.

I have so much to worry about with Abby and when I start to add in everything together I truly feel helpless. Thanks again.”
Our goal of $10,000.00 will help current needs, including travel to Shands in Gainesville . The need will be greater if they don’t get insurance approval. Let’s go over and beyond our goal!
