Donate-A-SK8 Holiday Gift Drive

Donation protected
12/3/17 UPDATE: We hit our goal this weekend with more than 25 skateboards in production! Check out our latest update for details and pictures! And thanks to everyone pitching in to this trucks and wheels fund. So much generosity!

Attn: Woodworkers, Skateboarders, and everyone in between!

Help give a kid in need a gift to remember this holiday season. Join the effort to donate at least 25 handmade skateboards to local toy drives around the U.S. by building one yourself, or sponsoring someone else who can!

Here are four good reasons why should you pitch in:

1. Donating a holiday gift through a reputable charity organization is just plain good karma.

2. You might be donating a gift anyway, why not make it  a handmade one? They're WAY better than store-bought gifts.

3. Skateboarding get kids outside and active, unlike video games.

4. Kids love skateboards! You're gonna make their flippin' day!

Fired up yet? Here's how you can participate:

Option 1: #SponsorASK8Maker
If you aren't a woodworker
, sponsor a deck from a participating woodworker around the country by donating to our trucks and wheels fund. While we're putting in the hours, sweat, and materials to build a stack of handmade skateboard decks, you can help cover the cost of the trucks and wheels -- about $50 for a good quality, safe setup. The more money we raise, the higher the stack of decks can get. The deadline for $ donations is Dec. 1 so we have time to purchase and distribute everything in time.

Option 2: #HolidaySK8Maker
If you are a woodworker
, you can pitch in by building a complete handmade skateboard deck with trucks and wheels from scratch in your garage, woodshop, or local maker space. Email me at (sk8makers at gmail dot com) and we'll send you the plans and building instructions. Once it's built, set it up with trucks and wheels at your local skateshop, send us a photo, and deliver it to a local toy drive!

Option 3: #TeamSK8Maker
If you are a woodworker and can't commit to buying the trucks/wheels in Option 2, send us your contact and we'll use the money raised from this campaign to donate a set of trucks and wheels for every $50 we raise.  Quantities are limited by the amount raised. If we can get to $1,250, that's 25 skateboard builds. First come first serve.

NOTE: Our recommended setup will run you about $60
~ $16 - Skateboard Bearings (Bones REDS or ABEC 5 or better)
~$18 - Generic Truck Set, 8-in. wide
~$21 - Generic Wheel Set (52mm-61mm, 78a-100a)
~$3 - Set of 1-1/4-in. Hardware
~$2 - Pair of 1/8-in. Riser Pads

Who's building the skateboard decks?

The idea for this donation effort came from Mark Hicks, aka MarkBuildsIt , proprietor of Plate 11 Workbench Co. This past weekend Mark got started on several handmade skateboard decks in his shop. Check it out!

Mark came to me, Matt Berger, 'cuz I happened to write the book on building handmade skateboards, literally. I've been teaching my SK8Makers workshops for more than five years and published "The Handmade Skateboard " (Spring House Press, 2014) to spread the bug.

Mark and I have pledged to build 12 decks between the two of us, and we're committed to growing that number to at least 25 in the next three weeks as we enlist more woodworkers to join the cause.

Help us get there!
