Dominika's Mission Trip to Rwanda
My name is Dominika Sieruta, and immediately after my college graduation I will embark on a volunteering mission trip to Kibeho, Rwanda. From January - May 2017 I will be teaching English at the Educational Insitute for Blind Children (image above).
In 1994 Rwanda was brutally affected by a genocide, in which an estimate of about 2 million people were killed. Despite efforts to improve tribal relations, Rwanda still remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
In the Rwandan tradition, the blind are associated with a curse that rests upon the entire family. Because of this, families often keep their blind children hidden away from society because of embarrassment. Alternatively, blind kids are also condemned to begging from an early age.
The Educational Insitute for Blind Children was initiated in 2008 and is run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Cross. The funds that I'm raising are not to cover my stay in Rwanda, but for the students of this Institute. This includes money for their school supplies, medical expenses, and the preservation of their facility.
If your heart wishes to support this expanding Institute for the Blind, please kindly consider donating to their cause! Any amount would make all the difference to help these kids be welcomed and accepted by their families and communities. I will be very thankful for all contributions!
