The Seminar in Public Criminology (Albany, NY)

We ask for your support in assisting with tuition costs of Community Participants enrolled in the Spring 2020 offering of the Seminar in Public Criminology at SUNY Albany (more on the course below). We are committed to providing an intellectual meeting place for the people of greater Albany, its criminal justice practitioners, and its emerging scholars to debate and reimagine American criminal justice policy. This semester, four Community Participants in the seminar have requested financial assistance in order to take the course for credit. Selected for inclusion in the seminar by a committee of course alumni, these four individuals represent the transformative potential of higher education in prison, decades of service to the returning citizens of upstate NY, and frontline leadership in preventing community violence.

The Course

The Seminar in Public Criminology at SUNY Albany is taught by Dr. David Hureau in the School of Criminal Justice. Now in its third year, the course seeks to bridge the gap between scholars of crime and the people, places, and institutions being studied. The course traces the history of American criminal justice policy, examines the role that academics have played in shaping this policy, and encourages students to develop collaborative and accountable approaches to scholarship. The seminar distinguishes itself from many academic courses by enrolling a unique combination of UAlbany students and Community Participants who are personally or professionally involved with the criminal justice system (such as police officers, social workers, formerly incarcerated people, prison educators, and directors of local non-profits), and by encouraging students to venture out into the community to develop meaningful projects that engage with local issues and populations. Recent successful projects include the implementation of a parental reading program at a local jail and a citywide effort to reduce barriers to employment for those returning home from incarceration. The course was recently awarded the university-wide President’s Award for Exemplary Public Engagement for its positive impact on the broader Capital District.

We hope you will support our efforts to keep the Seminar in Public Criminology truly open to the public. All contributions up to our goal will be used for direct tuition assistance for the four Community Participants that have requested financial assistance. Any proceeds in excess of our goal will be used as a scholarship pool for future Community Participants and special course events. Thank you!

Testimonials From Past Community Participants

“[The seminar] was interesting, because it gave me the opportunity to speak on behalf of one of the persons [affected by the criminal justice system] and present some of the experience-based realities versus just an academic perspective to, you know, to college students who may not have ever been exposed or, you know, experienced those realities.” - Returning Citizen

“I loved the course. I looked forward every week to class and to the discussion. I was kind of hurt when the class was over, you know, like, literally, I look forward to every Wednesday night you know, just trading discussion. I thought it was great.” - Returning Citizen

“[This type of course] is something that should be taking place in every discipline, because there's such a huge disconnect between academia and real life ... a course like this, where you've got practitioners and you've got people from multiple disciplines in the room, is far more valuable than then just getting an academic who studied the way an industry is, which is often completely off base.” - Public Safety Practitioner
