Diversify BookCon

Update, January 12, 2018

We have exciting news! Bookcon has reached out to offer an additional ten tickets for teen of color book bloggers/grammers/tubers! This is such a fabulous and unexpected development, and we want to make sure we can cover lunch for all those who secure a pass. In order to cover lunch for 20 people, we've raised our goal from $1100 to $1350. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, we are bowled over by your generosity. Let's keep going and #diversifybookcon!

What is Diversify Bookcon?

If you’ve ever attended any sort of geek-centric event, you’ve probably seen a consistent pattern – these spaces tend to be very, very white. The book world is no different: whether it’s the characters in books, the authors writing them, the people publishing them, and the bloggers spreading the word.

As a group of book lovers we came to notice our favorite book event of the year was no different. The last couple of years most of us attended BookCon as fans, and we couldn’t help but notice the distinct lack of diversity amongst the book enthusiasts. Particularly, among bloggers and booktubers, who face a unique challenge in breaking out their platforms. We thought about how to tackle this and a solution seemed obvious to us: if we wanted diversity, we had to find a way to make it happen ourselves.

Fandom spaces often feel like they cater to the white, upper-middle-class. You need money to attend conventions, you need money to run a channel, and you need money for books. Our goal is to help ease the financial burden of young teens of color who would love to attend BookCon, but simply don’t have the financial means to do so. We hope to raise money to sponsor weekend tickets and daily lunch for BookCon 2019. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to sponsor travel or room and board (maybe in the future), but hope purchasing tickets and lunch will help bring more diverse voices to BookCon

Who we want to send: Up to ten bookstagrammers, booktubers, and book blogger teens of color!

Why specifically those people? We see it as a way to help them meet each other, and hopefully, break out their platforms. A lot of the blogger/booktube/bookstagram meetups have been very white, and perhaps it is because diverse voices are having trouble finding their way there.

Where does the money go?
$65 Bookcon tickets + $15 lunch x 10 people = $800
2.9% processing fee
$0.30 charge per donation

Anything left over will be disseminated among participants to increase their lunch allowance.
