Disabled Driving Prototype
Donation protected
The purpose of this gofundme.com campaign is to secure additional funds to complete a working Prototype of a Portable Hand Control device for disabled drivers. Up until this stage, I have self-funded the project myself. The additional funds needed will carry the project through the last phase of improving the design and into prototype testing.
Our GoFundMe Goal:
We are raising $1500.00 to assist in the creation of the new and improved SSV5 Portable Hand Control Prototype .
The $1500 and my own personal investment money will go towards fabrication cost and iterations.
Every donation, big or small makes a huge difference in my potential success!
The Product
Portable Hand Control. What is this?
Portable Hand Controls are a device that allows a disabled person to drive and automobile. Today automobiles, whether a car, truck or a van, can be adapted for a range of physical disabilities. For example; Foot pedals can be raised, or replaced with hand-controlled devices. Automotive adaptive hand controls also make it possible to adjust acceleration as well braking.
Our Story
The first Portable Hand Control design was built in Austin Texas in 2004. Seeing the need for an improved portable driving device for the disabled, I set out to create my own version that was highly functional, high quality and affordable. Myself being a t-4 paraplegic for the last 30yrs, I knew that I could create a better mouse trap. With tools that I purchased from Home Depot and Harbor Freight, I created my version of a portable hand control driving device. Over the years, I manufactured and sold many sets of Hand Controls. Unfortunately due to circumstances in my family, the business was shut down in late 2008.
The Problem
Portable Hand Controls can be very difficult to attach an automobile Depending on the type of the vehicle, if one tries to attach the controls while seated in a wheelchair outside of the vehicle, the gas and brake pedals may be out of reach. If in the seated position inside the vehicle, the dash and steering wheel prevent the leaning from side to side to attach the controls. The dash and steering wheel also take away the line of sight to the foot pedals, making it impossible to see what you doing.
The Solution
Seeing the need for a solution, I created a simple one handed install design. With one hand the controls can be attached to the gas and brake pedals. Obliviously, I can’t go into full details as to how this works until I have my design completed.
The Goal
Our goal is to build a new product that address’s a commonly demonstrated problem of installation and portability. The original SS-V1 portable hand control began with the idea to design a simple high-end portable hand control that cost under $200.00. The new design, the SS-V5 will be a premium product that will address the commonly demonstrated problem installation and portability as well as functionality and will have the sense of style. The new control is expected to retail in the $500.00 range.
Fabrications Cost Include:
1. AutoCad drawings. Digital Mock-Up
2. Sourcing Materials
3. CNC Milling
4. Welding,Cutting, Sawing, Painting
5. Assembly
6. Testing
7. Iterations
Unfortunately, all of these things are very expensive and I don’t have all the funds needed to complete the prototype myself. Your contributions will go directly towards the fabrication cost and iterations.

Our Reward
If the GoFundMe campaign is successful, we will be offering the following gift, as thanks for your support!
We realize that this is a specialized product and not everyone can use this. If you should know someone who is disabled and could use this, we will gladly send them a set of controls at our cost plus shipping. The exact cost is not known at this time.
If we are successful with this prototype launch we intend to start a Kickstarter campaign to take this to the next level. We will keep everyone posted on our success as we move forward.
GoFundMe Supporters will also get early notice when our Kickstarter goes live.
