Volunteer Water Quality Gear

Tax deductible
Did you know that almost half of all the drinking water consumed in Texas is sourced from the Trinity River Basin between North Texas and Houston? The Trinity River Basin is also a critical water source for wildlife, agriculture, and recreation.

So monitoring and ensuring the quality of the Basin water is critical, and the Texas Master Naturalist North Texas Chapter’s Aquatic Alliance for Texas Stream Team project plays a key role in making this happen. Dedicated volunteers from the North Texas Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists Texas Stream Team project, along with the Meadows Center for Water & The Environment, Texas State University and other groups, collect data every month from watersheds in Dallas and Collin County. That data is then published along with regulatory data collected by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, municipal storm water departments, and Trinity River Authority.

Volunteer Monitors are beginning to use new digital water-monitoring kits that are faster and more efficient than conventional chemistry kits—even enabling testing from canoes or kayaks. The new kits are safer for both testers and the environment, as they eliminate the pollution generated by the use and disposal of chemicals. Because they don’t require the replenishment of chemical ingredients, they reduce public costs, which is good for all of us.

Our goal is to replace at least six of our old kits with digital ones by late 2017. Each kit costs about $500.

Can you help us with funding for this initiative? Your support will be especially appreciated by the 50% of Texans who get their drinking water and recreation here in North Texas, and downstream, from the Trinity River Basin. Thank you.
