Support for Diane's Battle #Fcancer

"I'm not sick, I have cancer."
These are the words our mother defiantly stated to our family when she was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma, also called Bile Duct cancer in June 2015. This statement has defined our mom as she has battled this cancer for the past 14 months. Up until 3 weeks ago, our mom refused to alter her lifestyle. She continued to work, hang out with friends, and travel. When this summer began, she was able to resume her bus driver gig at her beloved summer sleepaway camp but unfortunately, 3 weeks ago everything fell apart.

My name is Julia Weiner, and I have an older sister, Rachel and younger brother, Jeremy. Rachel is 23, studying Speech-Language Pathology at Mercy College. Our younger brother, Jeremy is 18 and about to begin his post-secondary studies at Brookdale Community College. I am 20 and currently study at the Interdisciplinary Center in Israel. Our father, Allen, is a NYC school teacher at a school for developmentally disabled young adults. He has been a school teacher for 30 years and is extremely dedicated to his students and our family.

When my mom got diagnosed, Rachel and I thought about coming home to be with the family but before we could even finish communicating this thought, our mom said that was absolutely not going to happen. She insisted that we needed to live our lives and continue our studies. "What do you think you're gonna do, sit around and watch me? I'm not going to be sitting around, I'm going to continue living my life and so should you".

She underwent chemotherapy for a year as well as being part of a trial drug. Although she was told that her cancer is incurable and inoperable, she made remarkable progress. Over the first nine months of treatment her tumor had reduced in size by 38%.

In recent weeks, her health has rapidly deteriorated. She was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC, 2 weeks ago. Although her optimism remains, last week her doctor said we should begin to look into getting her transferred to an in-patient hospice care facility.

Due to this unexpected turn of events, (even her oncologists were stunned by her rapid deterioration) we have created this GoFundMe. The money that we raise will be used towards covering any further medical care including, but not limited to, hospice, transportation, etc.

No words can describe how grateful we all are for the constant love and support we have been receiving from all of our friends and family. Any contribution, not matter what the size, will be greatly appreciated and mean so much to our family. Our mom is a strong, fearless, and relentless woman who has touched the lives of many. She has and continues to inspire us each and every day.
