DHS Adam Taliaferro Senior Service Athlete of the Year

This fall, Deptford High School has proudly nominated seniors John Cooper & Daniella McCurdy to represent the Spartans as the 2019 Adam Taliaferro Community Service Athletes of the Year. This honor, awarded in conjunction with the Adam Taliaferro Foundation, raises money for sports related spinal cord injury research and education. Throughout the 2018-19 school year John & Dani will raise money which will support this extremely important foundation, and, at the same time, they will have the opportunity to earn a college scholarship.
In case you are not familiar with his story, Adam Taliaferro was a football player at Eastern High School in Voorhees, NJ. After graduation, he continued to play football at Penn State and he was excited to see what the future held for him as a Nittany Lion. In 2000, during a game at Ohio State, he was paralyzed while making a tackle and was taken off of the field on a stretcher. Adam underwent spinal fusion surgery and doctors told his parents that he would probably never walk again. Hearing this news, Adam became more determined, and just three short months later, Adam miraculously “walked” out of the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
Soon after, Mr. Taliaferro started his foundation which supports athletes who suffer sports related head and spinal injuries in the tri-sate area. Along with providing financial support to the athletes and their families, the foundation also provides educational workshops and training related to the prevention and care of these types of sports related injuries.
Ms. Rachel Kerr, one of the teachers at DTHS has been instrumental in helping to fund-raise and get this information out in our community in hopes of gaining recognition for this worthy cause. Throughout the school year, Ms. Kerr, John, Dani & their families will be hosting various fundraisers and events to help raise money for this worthy cause.
