The Lemelson-MIT program is an organization that celebrates the spirit of invention in aspiring engineers through a national grant initiative for students in grades 7-12. This past grant cycle, teams all across America applied to the program with their invention ideas. Out of the many who applied, just 15 teams were selected to receive up to $10,000 to develop their ideas into actual products. On October 24, 2017, our Dublin High School Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam was awarded $9,000 to construct an assistive technology for the Tri-Valley Special Olympics.
SpORT (Special Olympics Robotic Thrower) is a machine that will allow over 600 handicapped students all across the Tri-Valley to participate in modified basketball and soccer.
In June, our InvenTeam will be traveling to EurekaFest, hosted at MIT, to present our final machine to hundreds of student and professional engineers. Our team has already been able to model and prepare an initial design for SpORT. However, in order to make this machine the best it can be, we needed to raise $20,000 to cover additional prototyping, team transportation, and machine transportation costs to EurekaFest.
After months of outreach and fundraising efforts, we are still almost $6,000 short of our goal. We must finish the machine in a little over a month and we need these final funds to complete our prototype. We will also use these additional funds to continue the production of the project through the next couple years. This will only be possible through your help!
