I teach 2nd grade math, science, and social studies at the Denver Green School.
Our school is a Title I Innovation School located in Denver. We are a National Green Ribbon School award winner and for the past four years, our school has been identified as both a "high-performing" and "high-growth" school. In addition to our academic success, we are proud of our "hands-on, brains-on" approach to learning where students get outside the classroom and bring learning to life. Our school is a school that focuses on integrating our sustainability curriculum with core content standards. We strongly believe in teaching our students how to live sustainable lifestyles.
We celebrate the incredible diversity of our students. With our socio-economically diverse population, our students represent over 30 countries from around the world, speaking 17 different languages, and 67% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
Starting in January, our overarching sustainability unit is called Changemakers. For a few months, we study important people in history and how they made the world a better place. We begin by studying inventors. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to also become inventors and engineers themselves by experiencing a STEM unit. I found a fantastic curriculum through PictureSTEM . This unit is materials-heavy, however, and I need to purchase about $500 worth of materials. You can read the list of materials needed in the unit here . The most expensive item is a very cool robot mouse game that teaches the students basic coding skills. We'd need 7 of these games and they cost about $40 each.
