Dexter and Derby are two adorable dogs who lived in a wonderful, loving home – until their owner lost it in a foreclosure. The owner placed the dogs in a kennel while he tried to find a new place. Despite his optimistic outlook, his situation was actually pretty dire. You don’t end up on the street because of a “minor setback.” Debts, on top of medical issues that were keeping him from working had left him destitute. After nearly three weeks, the kennel presented him with a bill that he could not pay. He could not get the dogs out without paying, and the kennel planned to send the dogs to a shelter where their future would be uncertain.

The good news is that these fur babies have a few godparents! Friends found out about the situation and rushed in to help. We paid a small down payment on the kennel fees, and the vet agreed to keep the dogs a little while longer. We are working with a rescue org, Lifeline Animal Project, to find a foster home for the dogs where they will be happy and properly cared for while the owner gets back to a stable situation.

We are looking for more godparents to Dexter and Derby to help cover the costs of getting them situated. We are seeking $3000 to pay the kennel fees (it’s coming up on a month) to get the dogs out and into their new home. There may also be additional kennel fees at a rescue shelter while the foster home is prepared.

Depending on how quickly we raise this money and what the final bill is when we move the dogs, we may have some extra. This will be used to cover costs of setting up the foster home. If we still have funds left, we will donate to the Lifeline Animal Project which is helping us find a new home.

The dogs are all their owner has left, and their return to a safe, stable home will be the first good news he’s heard in a long time. Getting Dexter and Derby to a new home will save more than the dogs.

Hello donors,

I wanted to give an update on the dogs. I think we all expected to see photos of the dogs in new homes by now, but the process is moving very slowly. The dogs are still at the kennel.

The good news is that thanks to your donations and outpouring of support, Sandy Springs Veterinary clinic is continuing to take great care of the dogs even though the official bill is way beyond what we've paid them. They really are great.

Derby is still being very shy. Dex, the pitty, is still a bit nervous around most people but has bonded with one of the vet techs. We are trying to get the vet tech to foster Dex because he loves her so much.

I will update again when the situation changes. Again, without your financial support, these dogs would have gone to the county shelter and may have been euthanized. You all made a difference, thank you.

Congratulations to all of the new Godparents for Derby and Dexter! Thanks to your generosity, we've raised enough money to get the dogs to new homes.

Did we hit our $3000 target? No, we got about $1300, including some donations outside GoFundMe. The good news is that the kennel is willing to take what we have and release the dogs.

We would like to give a shout-out to Sandy Springs Veterinary Clinic (just north of Atlanta). These are great people who love animals. Their main priority has been the health and safety of Dexter and Derby. They have taken great care of them, even putting up with Dexter having some behavior issues due to separation anxiety. He's warmed up to the staff over the weeks and has now calmed down a lot. They put in a lot of effort trying to care for him and cheer him up.

The dogs are now in the process of being transferred officially to Fulton County animal control. Upon reaching intake, Lifeline Animal Rescue will take them to foster homes. They will be separated at first, but we hope to reunite them as soon as possible.

They have been frightened and sad for several weeks and now we hope to see them happy again. Their dad can now focus on his own problems knowing that his boys are taken care of. This is all thanks to you.

I will update again when I have some pictures to share.

Just a quick update.

Everyone has been so generous! We are truly blown away. We're going to make another partial payment to the vet today. Right now, we're waiting on word from the rescue organization. We will update with pictures of happy pups as soon as we can get a safe place for them to go.
