Derrick Perry's Medical/Bill Fund

My name is Kendra Kosier and Derrick Perry is my nephew. Derrick is only 21 years old and has endured a lot at his young age. I've been looking out for him since his parents passed. First his mother, when he was only a year old, and his father when he was 14. This  past year has dealt him a rough hand and I've been there for him every step of the way. As much support as his fiancé, Maegan and I can give, it is still not enough. We need more support from friends and family.

Derrick was enjoying the end of a nice summer and heading into fall when a series of unfortunate events occurred. First, he needed to have a hernia repair. Surgery went well and he was recovering. Poor kid had a double whammy and had to have a root canal while barely being a few days post-op from the hernia repair. These two ailments would be more than enough for anybody to overcome at once, but life wasn't finished throwing curveballs to Derrick just yet. Derrick has occasional back pain from time to time. During this time it got the best of him. Not a week after his surgery and root canal his back started acting up, even more than usual. He could no longer handle the pain so he decided to go see a back specialist and had an MRI. A cyst was found during the MRI and needed to be drained. During his recovery from this procedure Derrick was still having an extraordinary amount of pain and was later admitted into the hospital.

Once Derrick was admitted to the hospital, turns out the back pain was more severe than originally thought. The results from the cyst revealed it was infectious. His conditions became worse and suddenly he had trouble breathing. Turns out the infectious growth made its way on to his heart. As bad as this condition is to begin with, it is worse for Derrick. Derrick already has a bad heart and is in need of a heart valve replacement. Derricks heart valve doesn't close properly and leaks. The infection made its way onto his leaky valve and once the infection made its way into the heart, it got in his bloodstream and was transferred throughout the entire body. To try and counteract the infection, a dose of strong antibiotics were given to him. A mixture of the harsh antibiotics and the heart not pumping properly caused a severe reaction to Derrick’s organs. His kidneys and liver started to shut down.

Derricks Cardiologist decided that Derrick was in urgent need of expert medical attention. He was intubated and transferred to the University of Michigan Hospital via life flight. After numerous days of waiting for Derrick’s organs to stabilize it was determined that he needed the heart valve replaced in order for him to be able to survive. Derrick underwent the grueling, ten hour, open heart surgery and almost didn't make it out of the operation. Derrick almost didn't make it out of surgery and required 60 units of blood during the operation before he was finally stabilized.

After all Derrick has endured he still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. He has been tube fed from the beginning of his hospital stay and needs to be able to eat on his own again. During his stay Derrick’s kidneys never healed as expected. He is on constant dialysis and at this point may still need a kidney transplant if they don't heal on their own. During this time Derrick has been bed ridden and become very weak. He is in need of physical therapy to try and build his strength back up.

The news continues to get worse. Derrick entered the hospital on October 7th. His ten weeks of FMLA at his job expired on December 16th. Derrick has been terminated from his job and lost his insurance. He is unable to receive Medicaid and will be unable to pay his hospital bills with his lack of income and insurance. With no end in sight to his recovery period, the bills just keep mounting. It would be greatly appreciated by Derrick and all his family members if anybody could find it in their hearts to donate this holiday season. Derrick isn't finished fighting and he needs all the support he can get.
