Derek's PhD fieldwork fund

I'm a youth and community worker and a PhD student. Through my research I want to contribute to an emerging knowledge base around the practice of 'Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping' and it's potential as an alternative to militarised approaches to civilian protection and ultimately, it's contribution to a more peaceful and just world.  I'm humbled to have got this far and am hungry to do and learn more and to make a difference through my work. I'm appealing for £2000 to help me reach the next part of my learning journey, specifically to contribute to the cost of spending a month in Mindanao, Philippines, to undertake primary research (itemised costs are given below).

We learn in many ways, not least socially; our development of skills, values and identity traits given context by our interactions and relationships with others. This can be argued to be true for our genders as much as our jobs and without a critical eye on the structures, hierarchies and power involved in these processes we risk perpetually reproducing oppression, even (especially?!) in social justice work. I'm concerned with the relationship between situated learning and knowledge and the practice of gender in NGO work, especially in situations of violent conflict.

I am in the fourth and final year of a self-funded PhD. To date I have recieved no grants or awards from any academic body or charity. I have worked throughout the programme in order to support my own education. In January I am conducting a month of field research with the civilian protection NGO Nonviolent Peaceforce in Mindanao, Philippines. Data collected during this period will form the basis of my final thesis on gender and learning.  I believe that this research will be of interest and use to both practioners and academics (or people who, like me, are a bit of both) and I am seeking support  toward the costs of this research trip including

-International Flights £350
-Internal transportation within the philippines £250
-Insurance £100
-Accomodation £400
-Food £450
-A data recorder £150
-Secure hard drive for backing up information in transit £50
-A first aid kit and other travel essentials £50
-Contingency funds £200

Any support would be very much appreciated and even if you don't contribute, I'd be delighted to discuss the research with you further if you drop me a line. In the mean time I'm blogging about the experience at praxiscommunitarian.tumblr.com . See you on the other side.

Peace!
