Denis Klimenko's Memorial Fund

$34,198 of $35,000 goal

Created September 8, 2017
Dear friends, colleagues, students:

Our sweet and humble friend Denis Klimenko needs help. Denis is in coma in a hospital in Houston. He had a heart attack on September 3rd and has been in coma ever since. His mother Oksana is in Russia and we are trying to do our best involving authorities on both sides to make her come here as soon as possible. He is in critical condition, which is why it is very important that his mother can be with him now.

Denis is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at LSU. He started in 2012 and was supposed to graduate this fall. We all know our Denis as a cool Russian guy who never says 'no' and is always ready to help, be it moving our furniture on a short notice or celebrating our graduations, weddings, birthdays…you name it. For some, Denis is a responsive colleague and officemate, for others a responsible TA and a hardworking student. For the lucky few, he is a roommate and a compatriot. But for all of us he is a loyal friend who now needs all the help he can get.

We are collecting funds to help Denis with medical expenses and his mother with her travels and accommodations. Denis will appreciate any donations that you can make. We will keep you posted on his condition and his mother's travels, and you, please, keep Denis and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dear friends,

I would like to give you a quick update. Oksana is at home in Russia, safe and sound. She arrived on Friday. It has been announced that Denis is going to be granted a posthumous Doctoral degree, so Oksana is planning to return to Baton Rouge in December for the ceremony of Commencement. The money that we were able to raise was enough to cover the funeral expenses and for the flights for both Oksana and Nastya.

Thank you again for incredible support that Oksana and all of Denis’s friends were able to get during the sad month of September.

Please, stay in touch and keep Denis’s memory alive.

With gratitude,

Dasha

Dear friends,

As we are preparing for the Denis's funeral, I would like to inform you on how the money is going to get to Oksana. As Oksana does not have a SSN needed to withdraw the money and set up a bank account, Frank Holthaus, as agreed with and approved by Oksana, will withdraw the money on her behalf. Frank is a Baton Rouge lawyer, who helped Denis when he was in the car accident 5 year ago, and is handling the succession of Denis. Once the money is withdrawn, he will then write the checks to cover the funeral expenses and will give Oksana the remaining money. I will post the final information about the funeral tomorrow. Please, stand by.

Thank you,

Dasha

Dear friends,

It is with a heavy heart and enormous sadness that we share the news of Denis’s passing last night.
His mother arrived on Thursday night and was able to be with him until the last moment. Oksana is heartbroken and stunned by her son’s senseless death. She is thankful for your prayers and thoughts of Denis and donations to his family. The money that we collected will be used to cover the medical and funeral expenses.

We have created a group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/119064975461155/?fref=nf and we encourage you to share your memories, stories and your photos of and with Denis. Oksana lost a lot of pictures so she wants to have as many as she can.

We are currently making arrangements for Denis’s funeral and we are preliminary planning for visitations to be held at St. Alban’s Chapel on LSU Campus on Friday, September 22nd. We will share more about the funeral very soon.

Oksana’s last words near Denis’s bed were:
“I know that you are all coming from different countries and cultures, and have different religious beliefs, and I ask you to pray the way you know so that his soul can find a place in the universe where it can be calm and happy”. She asks you to continue to pray for Denis’s peaceful journey. Let’s follow her lead.

Sharing our loss,
Houman, German, Dasha, Milad, Ping, Ehsan, Vladimir, Nikolay, Alexei, Marina, Francia, and Oksana
