Stop The 1% From Buying Democracy

Tax deductible

Our Campaign:

Democracy Matters students in our “Restore Democracy” project have been working since May in the early caucus and primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire as a counter-weight to the powerful SuperPACs and wealthy individuals who are flooding the airwaves.

DM students have questioned, talked with, and made clear to the Presidential candidates that America cannot tolerate a political campaign system dominated by the rich at the expense of the rest of us.  Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley have already signed our “Restore Democracy Pledge.” With our grassroots organizing, we have developed a strong presence in both states – Check out the press our efforts have been receiving from The Intercept , Common Dreams  and others. Bernie even made a video  congratulating DM students!

Now with the second phase of “Restore Democracy” beginning, we are creating Democracy Matters college chapters in both states. With growing chapters, even more students are joining our grassroots activist movement to get big money out of politics and people back in.

The first phase of “Restore Democracy” was funded by an individual donor. Now that grant has run out, which is why we need your help! Luckily we have received a matching grant of $12,000 to build on our work in these states.  Every dollar you contribute will be doubled by this matching grant. Our goal is to match the grant fully to reach our goal of $24,000, and support 14 new Democracy Matters chapters in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Democracy Matters chapters will continue and amplify the successes we have had in fighting back against billionaires and their attempt to buy the 2016 election.

We hope you agree with the urgency of stopping the highjacking of our democracy by rich political funders. Support our project, and help us to create a government that is truly of, by, and for the American people.  Any amount helps, but please be as generous as you can be.

More Information on Democracy Matters:

Founded by former NBA player Adonal Foyle, Democracy Matters is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, non-partisan student organization fighting for a more inclusive democracy by getting big money out of politics and people back in. Our goal is to create a democracy in which everyone—regardless of wealth—has a fair voice in our political process, and a government that is of,  by and for the people, not dominated by rich political funders.

Democracy Matters has a unique focus on grassroots organizing to empower and activate college students in the fight for political equality. Democracy Matters’ internship program on college campuses throughout the country offers students individually crafted training in political organizing, theory, and communication. DM interns establish and grow active Democracy Matters chapters on their campus, involving students, faculty, and administrators.

Since 2001, Democracy Matters has sponsored more than 800 campus chapters in 32 states. Students organize teach-ins, discussion groups, petition and letter-writing, and voter registration drives. They write articles for their school papers, host “Democracy and You” radio shows, and get creative with poetry slams, inprov theater, poster-making contests, and DemROCKracy concerts. They build coalitions on campus and off with environmental groups, civil and human rights organizations, women’s advocates, and community volunteers, and have been part of state and national efforts to win money in politics reform, including the successful struggles for public campaign financing in Maine, New York City, Arizona, and Connecticut.

“Before Democracy Matters I was kind of shy and feeling pretty lost. I didn’t know where to direct my passion for politics and social justice. But through DM I have created great relationships, gained incredible skills and confidence that I can really help make a difference. Thank you DM!      --- Alejandra, University of California (CA)

“My amazing experience with Democracy Matters has changed my view of politics and activism – I’m hooked!”  —Cecilia, Simmons College (MA)

“I am a chemistry major and never paid as much attention to politics as I should have. But my view of politics has been forever changed by Democracy Matters and I find I am passionate about it and about money in politics. I now know I don’t have to wait for others to change our political system – I can be part of that change.”  —Christa, Appalachian State University (NC)

“I enthusiastically recommend working with Democracy Matters to anyone who wishes to create change in America.  - Brendan, Macalester College (MN)
