DEDfest is Edmonton's Alternative Genre Cinema Festival! We're entering our ninth year, and hoping to bring you the best lineup of new independent cult, horror, SCI-fi, fantasy, action and documentary films.
But we need your help.
Due to rising costs and a low Canadian dollar (and despite a loyal fan base of filmgoers) we're finding it near impossible to continue to make Edmonton THE place to watch - and to make - great genre cinema.
And our civic funders aren't coming to the rescue. To put it in perspective, most international film festivals in Canada receive approximately $60,000 to $89,000 in civic funding. We get $5K. And even that looks unlikely for next year.
Even though we are a "niche" event, we've shown - and continue to show - amazing, wide-appealing films that have premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, Fantasia, Fantastic Fest and more. These are acclaimed genre films like IT FOLLOWS, THE BABADOOK, and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.
We've also brought some amazing guests to town. Past DEDfest guests have included legends like Henry Rollins, Michael Biehn, and Bobcat Goldthwait, and amazing new filmmakers like Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind's Eye) and Jeremy Gardner (The Battery).
We've also been steadfast supporters of local genre cinema and YEG's film industry, working to bridge the gap between up-and-coming filmmakers from across North America and our own homegrown talent.
But rising costs are jeopardizing our mission. Even shipping films is becoming too expensive for us. We have no paid staff - every penny we earn goes back into bringing you the best fest in the west.
By helping us reach our goal, you'll be helping us bring the best indie genre films to town, and the filmmakers as well. Funds raised will go towards guest travel, screening fees, advertising, and print traffic costs. It will help us keep DEDfest alive!
