Deb Bencko's Fight Against Cancer

Last December, Debbie Bencko, one of our Special Education teachers at Huntley High School was diagnosed with Stage IV Cervical Cancer.  This means that her cancer has spread, specifically to her lungs, and it has spread very fast. Since that time, her family has had some rough times where Debbie has been moved to the ICU due to her circumstances and needing to be monitored with more care, more frequently.

Monday of this week, January 8th, marks 4 weeks that she has been at the rehab facility in Wauconda. Each day she is slowly getting better. She is receiving physical/occupational therapy 5 days a week for about 45-60 minutes each day. The 2 days she isn’t are the 2 days after she has received her chemo as this really takes a lot out of her. She is eating better this week and you can see that she is getting stronger with the pt/ot and eating.

The plan is for the pt/ot to continue to work with her until she can walk. While she is at pt they are working with her legs and core part of her body. By doing this, it will get her to stand up and walk eventually by herself. While she is receiving ot, they are primarily working with her top half of her body and her arms. Once the team at the rehab facility deem that she is able to come home, then she is assigned a home healthcare team will come to our home and work with her.

When she was at the hospital for those 4 weeks, she was laying in bed for those 4 weeks, therefore she got really weak and her muscles forgot how to move that would allow her to walk.

She is receiving chemo every Thursday. She will have received 6 weeks of chemo this upcoming Thursday. They will do a CT scan and compare it to the 1st one they took and we are all hoping that the chemo is destroying the bad cells and preventing it from spreading.

She continues to keep her head high and do whatever the therapists ask her to do.

Any donation provided on this page will be presented to the Bencko family at the "Our Hearts Are With You" Benefit at Nick's Pizza & Pub on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 from 4-10 pm.    25 % of all Carry Out, Delivery, and Dining Sales (excluding alcohol), as well as a silent auction with various prizes and gift bags, will be held during this event, so please feel free to stop by .
