In early May 2018, Dean Matsubayashi was diagnosed with a brain tumor and is currently undergoing daily chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

While Dean is grateful to have a strong emotional support system, brain cancer treatment comes with serious financial concerns and unexpected expenses that the family would like to be prepared for.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to support Dean and his family during this difficult time.  Any contribution is greatly appreciated!

In addition to being a husband to Kim and a father to his daughter Emma (10) and son Sei (5), Dean is the Executive Director of Little Tokyo Service Center, a community development and social service nonprofit. He has been with LTSC for 19 years and has served as Executive Director for over 5 years, leading a team of 100+ staff members to serve the community and support those most in need. We now look to his friends, family, colleagues and community to lift him up during his time of need.

Please make a donation, leave a note of encouragement and spread the word! The entire Matsubayashi family thanks you for all of your love and support.

Go Team Dean!

Happy 2019! We hope the new year finds you all well. On our part, we are feeling exceptionally thankful. We want to share the great news that Dean has been doing great with treatment! Although the tumor is inoperable and there have been a few scares along the way, the 30 days of radiation and 42 days of chemotherapy shrank the tumor. Almost as quickly as he had declined in the first few weeks of his diagnosis, Dean’s improvement was rapid and dramatic. He regained his strength, balance, speech, and most of his skills within the first few weeks, and the improvement has continued. He’s feeling at least 80-90% his old self, and he has even been able to return to work part time...and may increase to 3 days a week in the new year.

We are SO thankful he is doing so well and just pray and hope with all our heart that his much improved condition will last for a long, long time.

We want to thank all of you once again from the very bottom of our hearts. Your love and generosity stunned and just embraced us and offered us a sense of security and tremendous support in a terrible time. We have put the funds in an account as a rainy day fund should we need it for Dean's treatment or for other related expenses that might come up (we are still doing MRIs every two months). It gives us great comfort.

You've all played an invaluable part in this. We want to give a special shout out to all the incredible people at LTSC who have worked so hard and done so much to support us and to help the organization thrive even through all this. But thank you all SO much! We just did about a 2 mile hike to the observatory and back with the kids, and we all did well. If you want to see or catch up with Dean, please feel free to contact us directly.

With great love and appreciation,

Dean, Kim, Emma, & Sei

A message from Kim & Dean:
We just wanted to send another enormous thank you for the incredible love and generosity of so many wonderful people. We are already so blessed to simply have you all in our lives. We also are extremely sorry we have not had the chance to send proper thank yous to the large majority of you! We feel terrible about that, but we hope you understand. The summer has flown by...and Kim is already heading back to school. As for an update, we are so happy to report that Dean responded very well to the chemo and radiation. As of the 7/22 MRI, his tumor shrank...and he is just feeling so much better. We are just praying that the shrinkage can be maintained and even for miracles even more shrinkage or the long term suspension of any tumor growth! Most of all, we are so thankful and feel incredibly blessed for this time together. We have placed the funds in a rainy day account that offer a great sense of comfort, and the thousand cranes LTSC spearheaded truly brought us such luck!

Hi! A quick clarification - the last update was from Kim & Dean. Sorry, we have some things to work out.
Tenaya wasn't writing about herself. WE love her and thank her immensely and all of you for the kind notes to the radio buddies, to Neil for letting Kim and the kids go to church, to our moms and dads, uncles and aunties, brothers and sisters, cousins, and for all the wonderful food, gift cards, etc., too! :-) --Kim, Dean, Emma, & Sei

Sorry, I am just learning how to use this website. But I wanted to share a note from Dean:
"We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love & support from all of you. We love all of you and are so thankful."
We are truly moved and have been so incredibly blessed by all the kind words and generous gifts and by all the help from LTSC, especially Erich and Tenaya and so many others...one of Dean's teachers even donated. There is simply no way for us to thank you all properly for all you have done, but we so humbly thank you all from the bottom of our hearts...and are slowly working on getting our thank you cards out.
As an update: Although the first week after the first diagnosis on 5/12 was quite terrifying and the symptoms were , Dean has been responding well to treatment so far, especially in the last week! His speech is almost 100% improved, and he is strong, much more alert, and restless (a good sign of course)! Chemo and radiation treatments are tough on him of course, but there are many signs that it is really helping to control and shrink the tumor. So, we are so grateful and cherish this time. We know that the abundance of love and kindness, prayer, and well wishes have made all the difference.
