DCIS 10th Grade Canyonlands Trip

Donation protected
For the third year in a row, our 10th grade students from the Denver Center for International Studies will be traveling to Canyonlands National Park in Utah. This trip is a cross-curricular project designed for students to experience nature through the lens of a writer, historian, a scientist, and an economist. After a week of hiking through red rock canyons, traipsing along creek beds, examining petroglyphs, rafting the Colorado River and being awed by a night sky without any traces of light pollution, students write an argument about the current and historical relationship between humans and nature.

In order to get to Utah, we need to raise $2875 to help cover the cost of a bus for traveling there and back. Please consider helping students embark on this life-changing experience! We would be extremely grateful for any donation amount before March 1st, 2017.

Here are some quotes students wrote on the bus ride back to Denver last year:

"This trip was like a meditation-journey because we are so glued to modern technology, and we got to see what is around us besides buildings." -JQ

"This trip created a deeper relationship and connection between myself and nature. I kept pondering the idea of the two different worlds I live in and how each effects each other... I will take away an expanded love for the outdoors and I will do my best to preserve my resources as much as possible as we did at camp." -LP

"I really enjoyed becoming closer to a lot of my classmates that I did not expect to get close to. I loved the sense of community or even family that everyone had when we were all together, whether we were running for a hola-hoop, eating a meal or sitting around a campfire. The whole trip was amazing." -NS

"The trip was extremely reflective for me. Almost as if everything else stopped and I could finally think." -AS

"My peak was during the campfire/talent show when I saw my friends risk it all to show it all. Everyone together under a starry sky, all happy; it was more than I could ever ask for." -YR

"This trip was utterly awe inspiring & sensational. Disconnection from technology and connecting with the Earth, nature and people created an environment in which we could be creative, free and relaxed. I adapted to the Canyonlands lifestyle so much that my stomach turned a little when I got back on my phone after getting on the bus." -DM
