WHY
As many of you know, songwriting is one of the great passions of my life. Though I have been writing songs since I was 12, I have recently felt an incredibly strong draw to be more intentional with my songwriting and sharing my music with others. Whether in a church service, house show, or music venue, I clearly see that my songs strongly resonate with so many people - and something very unique and powerful happens when people's stories intersect in a song. And the more I play my music for others, the more I get asked if I have any recorded music. To which I sadly but hopefully reply, “Not yet!”
Recording my music and sharing it with people in a high quality way is my next step as an artist. This means recording these songs in a studio with professional musicians who will help deliver these songs in the best way possible.
WHAT
This recording will include seven original songs about God’s goodness in my own life, my marriage, and in hardship and loss. I've decided to do seven songs because the time required to record and see them through to the end is what I can realistically commit to at this time. My wife is on maternity leave until the beginning of April which allows for just enough flexibility for me to focus on this project. Now is a perfect time to go for it!
HOW
All instrumentation will be recorded with Matt Berry at Hewitt Studios in Minneapolis. All vocal tracks and mixing will be done with Samer Saem El Daher, my brother-in-law and international recording artist. All mastering will be done by Reuben Cohen and Lurssen Mastering who have won a Grammy and have mastered songs by Ryan Adams, James Taylor and many others.
COST
Five of the seven songs will have a full team of musicians featured on them. Each of these five songs will cost $1,525. This price includes recording musicians, paying musicians, recording my vocals, and finally mixing and mastering the tracks. The combined total for these five songs is $7,625.
The last two songs will be more "stripped down" and only feature a couple of musicians. This means less time in the studio and less musicians to pay. These two songs will have a combined cost of $1,680.
The final stages of the album will include digital distribution (putting the music on Spotify, iTunes and every major electronic retailing company out there) for $50. The final stages will also include a cushion of $645 for any unforeseen extra time in the studio, Go Fund Me’s 2.9% fee of the fundraising goal amount and a $0.30 transaction fee for credit and debit card donations.
This comes to a grand total of $10,000.
WHAT IF WE RAISE MORE MONEY THAN THE $10,000?
I have 6 additional songs on standby ready to be recorded at a future date. As I mentioned before, my time currently allows for 7 songs. However, if we raised an additional $5,000 for example, I could go back into the studio later this year or next and record as many songs as the additional fundraised amount would provide for. *insert brain explosion here*
TIMELINE
- Reach $ goal by March 11th.
- Complete all recording of instrumentation and vocals by April 5th.
- All mixing and mastering complete by June 1st.
- Album made available to the public by Fall 2019 at the latest. (Specific date to be determined. Stay tuned!)
WHAT I PLAN TO DO WITH IT
Share it on every major electronic retailing company (iTunes, Spotify, etc.) for everyone to enjoy!
I will also be sharing this album with my own personal network which includes worship leaders, churches in multiple denominations, my alma mater, musicians and artists around the country. My hope is that these songs will bear testimony to God’s goodness in my life, encouraging others to see his good work in their own lives, too.
Lastly, I will use this album as a “business card” of sorts as I pursue more ministry opportunities and connections with other worship leaders and songwriters both locally and nationally. I clearly sense that songwriting is my tool to make beautiful art, which in turn inspires life to be lived more beautifully. This album will be a confident and excellent step toward professional artistry.
