Dat School - let's get it started!
We are happy to announce Dat School's opening for August 2018. Thanks to YOUR donations, we can launch the school and provide sliding scale tuitions to some families.
As you are aware, being an independant learning center also means being in constant research of funding. This is why we are starting our second goFundme campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/5p1lxds
We hope that you are still able and that you still have the desire to help us with our project. Real Education can't wait!
Dat School Founders,
Anne, Marion and Katie

I wanted to take some time to send you our latest news because a lot has been going on.
As part of our 4.0 schools fellowship, we ran a series of pilots : from October to December 17, we hosted 11 sessions on Sundays where we had new and returning kids. We then had Sundays in March and a full week during Spring break. We learned a lot and improved each pilot. Kids had a blast. Succes :-)
More people started hearing about us and reaching out, whether they were unhappy with the conventional school system and looking for anything else, or already familiar with Self-Directed Education (yes, it’s growing, slowly but surely!)
A few months ago, we applied to become a non profit organization. We should receive the answer on any day now. That would be a great step forward as we would be eligible for more donations and grants!
We are organizing a fundraising event on June 3rd at Urban South Brewery. We will have a dj, live music, open mic and dance performances. Our goal is to raise enough money (mostly from donors and businesses sponsoring our event) in order to open in August.
We already have committed parents awaiting and working towards Dat School’s opening but the tuition that they will pay is, at this time, insufficient to cover the cost of our first year. Even though all parents were quite satisfied with the pilots and have witnessed how engaged and happy their children were, a few still have doubts or see obstacles about Dat School being their child’s full time school. Many parents need to see the school exist for a full year before they take the leap and register their children. Most schools that I visited started with 4-5 children and were then able to show others how it worked, how happy children were and how much learning was happening.
We are very grateful for your (continued) support, most good causes take time and relentless effort to be recognized. Don’t hesitate to donate again if you believe in us, spread the word and follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
Yours in Self-Directed Education,
Cela a bien donné!

Here's an update about what's been going on with Dat School:
In May and June, we ran 6 pop up classes. They were a success! The kids actively participated and enjoyed the whole experience. We were able to observe several aspects of the school model and learned that some still need to be tested over a longer period of time.
After graduating from the "Essentials" program with the organization 4.0 Schools, we applied for their next level program and... got accepted. This means that we are going to set up a longer testing period and that we will get continued coaching throughout the process as well as access to some funding.
Finally, Marion just came back from NY where she attended the AERO⋆ conference. The keynote speakers were Akilah Richards, Peter Gray, Jonathan Kozol and Dayna Martin, all experts in the field of self-directed education, applied/lived in different settings (unschooling, public schools, learning centers). Other presenters included a superintendent, a former unschooler now in college, students from free schools, homeschoolers experts. Presentations were supported by data and testimonies that have turned out the conference very enriching and motivating. Many people are concerned by the state of the current school system and are trying to make a change, from within or from the outside.
The road to the opening of Dat School is long and can sometimes be complicated but with all this additional knowledge and support, we are very determined to make it happen!
Thank you for your support,
Anne, Katie & Marion
