What We Do
· The main cultural tradition that is core to our group are Oaxacan folk dances. Nevertheless, we are more than just a folkloric group, because we are not only learning the traditional dances from our beautiful state but also learning how each piece of regalia is created by Oaxacan women who are artists themselves. We see ourselves as young men and women passionate about the preservation of Oaxacan traditional dances and also of the material arts that evolved around them.
In order to sustain group we do the following:

· Perform in community and private events
· Parent and youth involvement to preserve traditions
· Leadership development
· Fundraise to sustain the group

Our story
Xiadani del Valle is a community-based folkloric group that grew out of a project launched by the non-profit organization Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño (CBDIO). Through a grant they received from the James Irvine Foundation, CBDIO formed a group to teach children, youth and young adults Oaxacan folk dances. In 2015, the grant ended, and a few members of the group had the desire for continuous learning and practicing Oaxacan folk dances, we continued gathering and working independently without any grants. From the very beginning, we have had challenges finding a practice location that worked for us and with us. We have moved to different locations from a parking lot, Fresno State and currently, we are practicing at Fres. Co (a local arts facility).

Our Success Stories

By joining this group I feel more connected to my mom’s background. I learned that the guelaguetza is big festivity where the different regions come together to share their folklore and food.

· By dancing with my mother now I understand the importance of family values.

· Now I can embrace my cultural heritage

· Since joining the group I felt more confidence in group activities.

· Since joining the club  I am participating in more school extracurricular activities.

More about our story
I will like to continue participating in the group and keep learning about my culture.
