Dan's road to recovery

Donation protected
Dan and Josee were in a serious motorcycle accident July 20th, 2018 near Fairmont Hot Springs. They were fortunate to have 3 nurses (from Calgary, on their way to a bachelorette party) at scene to assist until EMS arrived. They were transported from the accident scene to the hospital in Invermere by ambulance. Dan was transferred to Stars Air Ambulance (helicopter) to be flown to Calgary Foothills Hospital Trauma Unit. Josee was transferred to Cranbrook Hospital by Ambulance since Invermere did not have the necessary equipment to assess her injuries.

Upon arriving at the Trauma Unit, Dan was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain, 6 broken ribs, a broken clavicle, a damaged shoulder socket, a damaged scapula, and a severe fracture of the tibial plateau. On the schatzker scale, his was rated a 6, which is the highest rating. Typical injuries are rated at 2.

The first week was crucial since there was much difficulty in stabilizing Dan. He suffered from high blood pressure and an extremely high heart rate. This was compounded by the fact that he underwent 3 surgeries during this time.
The first surgery was to install an exoskeletal brace on his left leg to stabilize it. The second surgery was to his shoulder to fix his clavicle, scapula and shoulder socket. This surgery lasted almost 10 hours. His third and final surgery was to repair extensive damage to his left leg and to remove the exoskeletal brace. This surgery lasted close to 12 hours.
He spent about 3 weeks in the Trauma Unit and was on oxygen most of this time. He also underwent 2 blood transfusions.

On August 9th, it was determined that Dan was fit to transfer to a rehabilitation facility. He has been there since and will probably be there until October or November if all goes well.

Friends and family have been helping with food, time, energy and moral support. The ongoing support from friends, new and old, has been simply amazing.

The money we're trying to raise is to help Dan meet his financial and medical needs since he is self employed and currently can't work.

Dan is working hard to get back into shape so he can get back to a normal life but it takes time. Unfortunately, the longer he spends in hospital the more his bills pile up.

Thank you for taking the time to read Dan’s story. We hope you can take a little more time to share his story and spread the word.
