Danny can do it!!

My husband Danny, a stroke survivor, wants to ride from our little village in the North of Holland  to the Alpe D'Huez,  in the french Alps to raise money for Heliomare, the rehabilitation centre that gave him back his life after the stroke.  On 9/9/2018 he will ride on his three wheeler bike a distance of approximately 1500 km to the french alps.  This is a feat to achieve by anyone's standard let alone a stroke survivor.  Here is his story:

On the 7th of December 2014, Danny woke up early in the morning with a strange feeling in his head. He was a little unstable on his feet and felt confused. He didn't recognise his own hand and thought it was a strange thing that did not belong where it was. He went to the kitchen to make coffee, as he does every morning, but couldn’t find the coffee. I found him pacing the kitchen floor looking for the coffee. Then I realised that he was struggling to find words to describe the things he was pointing at.  It was very strange to see him struggle to find words.  Alarm bells were ringing in my head and sure enough at the hospital it was confirmed that Danny had a small stroke.  By the end of the day he was doing fine, and he was kept overnight for observations. I felt good and relieved and assured Danny that I will be back first thing in the morning to pick him up.  It was not to be.  Danny suffered a major stroke early the next morning. He was totally paralysed on his right side and he had lost all language ability; reading, writing and speaking.  When they told me I was in disbelief.  Danny could no longer walk, speak, write or read.  That same week I was near his bed holding his hand when he suffered an epileptic seizure.  Seeing him so vulnerable when I had never before seen him ill, tore at my heart. Two weeks later danny was moved to Heliomare, the rehabilitation center.  Next came a year of intensive therapy where he had to learn everything from the start, literally everything; how to eat, how to walk, how to move, how to read, write and talk and how to function in normal society. He is still learning. Danny is a fighter. He never gives up and does not stop. He is always positive and focuses on what he still has rather than what he has lost. Accepting the situation came easier to him than to me.  Three years later he has come a long way. He is no longer in a wheel chair and uses a cane to walk. He is learning to read, write and speak.  He has aphasia which means he knows what he wants to say but cannot find the words to say them.  The frustration of the first two years has eased and we are all learning to live a new normal. His three wheeler bike is his freedom. In this journey and with your help he wants to raise money for Heliomare. This rehabilitation center granted him his life back and was a life line most of the first two years not only to Danny but to the kids and I.  It is amazing that when Danny and I go there sometimes, and we still do, the happy and peaceful feeling is overwhelming.

This journey is a goal that Danny  has and he is determined to raise money to this centre that has helped him and is still helping him so much.  I hope that you will support him in this endeavour.
