Dance to Your Future Powwow & College Fair was born out of a request from Denver elders who approached Chenoa Crowshoe-Patterson (Blackfeet/Karuk), a DPS Native American Student Support (NASS) Education Partner supporting American Indian students at Thomas Jefferson HS and South HS, and asked if DPS students would be interested in hosting a powwow at Tallbull. Chenoa shared this invite with East High School’s NASS Education Partner, Darrick Silversmith (Navajo/Diné). Chenoa and Darrick shared the community’s request to their combined 92 students. These students, other DPS schools, and student allies excitedly accepted their elder’s request and committed to help host an outdoor powwow at Tallbull Memorial Grounds at Daniels Park in Castle Pines, CO on Saturday, May 6th from 10am-6pm.
With less than two months to prepare, the students have begun making arrangements to support a multi-school celebration of culture, community, and education. At the insistance of the students, letters to colleges and universities went out to solicit participation in a two-hour college fair which students will host in conjunction with this cultural celebration. In an effort to give back to their community, the students elected to host a community feed. Students have been fundraising at their schools to support powwow grounds keep and insurance, prize money for competing powwow dancers, drums, hosts, and overall cost of powwow and community feed. Students are also hoping to raise enough funds to purchase T-shirt memorabilia.
With your generosity, these students can see that their powwow will meet their intentions of educating youth on Native American college and career opportunities, share with their communities and schools the importance of culture, and overall, raising awareness around combined education, community, and American Indian culture. Update 4/26/17: We have decreased our goal as students continue to fundraise. You can see they have done quite a bit of hard work towards their goals!
