On June 30th, 2019, Dana Barrett, born and raised in East Quogue, NY, suffered a severe spinal injury in a tragic pool accident. After being airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital it was determined she suffered a C2 fracture, resulting in paralysis from the neck down and the inability to breathe on her own. Surgery is imminent to repair the fracture but her spinal cord has been permanently damaged. The doctors have said there is still hope but she will need extensive rehabilitation. The rehabilitation is going to be a considerable financial burden, as early estimations that have been given to her family are thousands of dollars per day. The road to recovery will take years.

In Dana’s 28 years of life, she has been through more than most can comprehend. As many of you reading this already know, she lost her father when she was 16 and her mother when she was 21 years old. Despite this, she has always held her head high and has amazed her friends and family with her strength and selflessness.

With every trial she has faced, she has always come out stronger. Dana will physically fight this, however she needs whatever help you can give to assist with her medical expenses which are rapidly accumulating.

“God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers”

Please help Dana fight this battle.

Hello and WOWOWOW! 50% of our goal for our Warrior has been reached! Thank you and keep sharing!
Update: Dana had surgery on Monday, July 15th first thing in the morning. The surgery went well, however, after a CT scan was done later in the day, the surgeon thought her neck could be better aligned. Unfortunately the neck brace had to go back on and Dana was informed she would need another surgery. As you can imagine she was extremely angry, frustrated and anxious.
The next day, on July 16th, our girl went in for a second surgery. It went well but we are waiting on the results of the CT scan she got this morning to see if the surgeon was successful with better aligning her neck. She currently has a trach, as she still can not breathe on her own and cannot feel anything from her neck down.
To be honest, Dana’s spirits have been mostly down but who can blame her? She is extremely anxious and uncomfortable. She can never find a comfortable position to lie in and her incision hurts very bad.
At this time, we are researching and touring various rehabilitation centers. For the first month or two of rehab, she will most likely be in New York! During this time, hopefully she will be up for visitors so we can all support her through her recovery.
We know there are many people who would like to see her but she has expressed that she does not want anyone to see her “like this” (words from Dana). We always tell her who has asked about her and always pass messages along!
Within the near future, Dana will need specialized equipment and months and months of intensive rehabilitation. Thank you for all of your donations as they will be used toward this!
The amount of support and outreach has been overwhelming for Dana and for her family. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Hello everyone! Thank you SO SO SO much for all of your donations, we just reached 25% of our goal! Please continue to share our girl’s GoFundMe with everyone!

An update on Dana: she is still waiting on surgery to repair the fracture in her neck. Once that happens we need to get her into the best rehabilitation center that specializes in this injury. On top of medical bills that are accumulating in the hospital, her rehabilitation will be tens of thousands of dollars a month. We need to fully support these costs so she can just focus on getting better!

In terms of Dana’s functionality, she is conscious and aware of everything that has happened to her. She asks for her loved ones and the fighter in her is already showing itself because she wants out of the hospital! She knows she will need surgery on her neck and that keeps her going-she knows she can get out after that. It is very important that she is in a calm, quiet, and peaceful environment before surgery. Her blood pressure and heartbeat are great! Despite all of the medical issues she endured immediately after the accident, she kept that heart going on her own. She is simply a fighter and will not give up, so we can’t either.

Once surgery is complete, the doctors do not know what her prognosis will be. All we know is that this is a very serious break and her spinal cord is very bruised.

Please keep praying and sharing her GoFundMe. Every little bit helps!

Thank you all so much. We can’t wait for Dana to see all of the support she has had during this very difficult time.
