Dan and Alice Craig of Rossford, Ohio recently had their lives flipped upside down by a rare and mysterious disease called Goodpasture. There is nothing "Good" about this as Dan has been hospitalized for 10 of the last 12 weeks with a disease that attacks his organs. Dan is fighting for his life at The Cleveland Clinic and the financial burden of this along with 3 months of medical bills have been overwhelming.
Dan's battle with Goodpasture has been relentless. Keeping him strong is his wife Alice, children Jenny, Mandy, Daniel, & Michael, and grandchildren Max, Levi, Brynn, Brody, and Avery. Dan has a passion for life. He's a dreamer and a believer. He has always had the ability to form natural relationships with people in a sincere and special way. He has the most loving heart and caring soul. So when this disease hit, it was so devastating to his family, because he has always been the rock. He brings them up when they are down, letting them see the positive in every situation.
He truly is a special person and is loved by so, so many.
On June 8th, Dan and his family flew to Florida for their annual family vacation. He felt fatigued for a couple days before being rushed to the ER on June 10th. Immediately, he was admitted to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he stayed (out of network)for 22 straight days.
Dan was diagnosed with a very rare and severe autoimmune disease called Anti GBM, or Goodpasture. This disease attacks the lungs and kidneys. After 3 days at Holy Cross, Dan was placed in the ICU because he could not breathe on his own and his kidneys were failing him. After three weeks of intense treatment that included plasmapheresis and chemotherapy, Dan was stable enough to return home to Rossford.
On July 2, Dan and Alice flew home.
Thankful to be home, Dan continued chemotherapy and other drugs to fend off Goodpasture, but just three days later Dan was admitted to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo because his kidneys were again failing; he then started daily 5am treatments alternating dialysis and plasmapheresis.
Two weeks later Dan returned home and was managing his new life of daily dialysis and chemo, but only for about 10 days before getting sicker.
On August 17th, Dan was rushed to the ER because of a high fever and his white blood cell count was critically low. He had an infection in his blood that nearly took his life.
Dan's greatest passion in life his is family and faith. He wants nothing more than having his children and grandchildren at his house while he cooks and spends time with them teaching life lessons. His family is the best cure for his disease. They are what keep him going every single day. The Craig family have been longtime parishioners at All Saints in Rossford.
Dan spent years running the meat/perishables department regionally for Save-a-Lot/ and Meijer on Central. Dan and Alice have been put in an extremely tough financial situation even though they have insurance.
Alice, an RN at St. V's, has been working less hours to take care of her husband. who is now on disability. Their new
combined income does not cover the costs of basic living let alone his medical bills and daily treatments.
The medical bills continue to mount from Florida and Ohio and their policy limits have been exhausted. Please help out however you can.
