DACA student striving for education

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

My name is Yasmin Ortiz and I am currently a second year student at Humboldt State University. I completed my first year with a 3.4 GPA in my first semester. And made it on the honor rolls list my first and second year.

I am majoring in Spanish, minoring in dance; and planning to add sociology as a double major. I have goals of becoming an interpreter and a spanish teacher, a guidance counselor to help those in need to succeed, and to always keep dance in my life and hopefully one day own my own studio. I mainly want to help others who don’t get the opportunities to strive. My Mexican roots and culture and an amazing Spanish literature teacher inspired my love for Spanish language. My dream is a simple one: to continue learning and growing in hopes of sharing my love for Spanish and dance with others, and be able to make a change.

Recently I have found myself in a scary place in which I fear I may have to put these dreams on hold. At the start of 2018 a series of events happened which changed my life forever. First, my parents moved across the states to Atlanta Georgia, then in January my dad was detained unfairly by undercover ICE agents while helping an elderly family member with a flat tire on the side of the road. He was held without due process in a detention center for weeks in the middle of nowhere Georgia and was then deported. As a result of this horrible event, the rest of my family ended up moving to Mexico.

I made the difficult decision to stay in California for my dream, but now I find myself alone in California, attempting to make a living for myself all while striving to getting an education.Today, I fear that I won’t be able to continue my studies and achieve my goals. I have worked hard to get where I am today, but without my parents' financial support I have been struggling. As a DACA recipient, I unfortunately don’t qualify for Calfresh nor any other benefits offered such as loans or more financial support. I currently receive financial aid but is limited amount of money that the government can give Dreamers. Looking for jobs under DACA has been challenging since most places wont let you finish the application after they ask if you are a citizen.

For these reasons I am here asking for your help today. The donations you generously make to this campaign will allow me to cover the cost of school books, living expenses, and hopefully to help cover whatever tuition my financial aid doesn’t cover. In the meantime, I remain hopeful and am still on the job hunt but I need your help as I transition into this new life.

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.
