On the way home to Iowa from vacation 4 yr. Jazzelle became very sick and was admitted to the Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake City on August 10th. Jazzelle has a yet unknown condition that is causing her to suffer from encephalitis (infection/inflammation of the brain) and myelitis (infection/inflammation of the spinal cord) . These things are causing her nervous system to basically shut down and she is unable to talk or move. Jazzelle is a very sick little girl. The doctors are slowly staring to eliminate the potential causes but the answer still eludes them. They are a thousand miles from home and the medical bills and expenses are pilling up. Any help that we can give this young family to help them through this tough time would be beyond appreciated.

Some have been asking for more donation options. For those who want to send a check, money order or cash an account has been set up at Security Trust & Savings Bank. Just write on the envelope or let them know it is for the Jacuinde family. The mailing address is:

Donations can also be dropped off at the bank at:

It has been an eventful past few weeks. Jazzelle has been released from the hospital and the family is back in Iowa. She has made incredible strides and is doing better than anybody has expected. The road is still long however as physical therapy will still be needed for her to get back to where she was before she got sick. Things are going good though!! The road still continues to be long though and they can still use our support. Thank you everybody for your thoughts, support and prayers.

Cesar returned to Salt Lake City and got a great surprise - Jazzelle is now moving her whole body, talking, and eating! This is great news!! Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers!

The doctors have put their plans on hold to start using some other drugs and they are going to see how she keeps progressing since she has come so far in just three days.

The current plan now is to get the therapy and rehab teams together to plan how they are going to get her up to 3 hours of rehab a day so they can start their aggressive therapy. Once the aggressive therapy starts they will be much closer to being able to bring jazzelle home.

Even though there has been dramatic changes in the past few days, Jazzelle has a long road ahead of her before she can come home. They continue to need our thoughts, prayers, and support.

Again thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, and support. Karina and Cesar appreciate it!!

I have talked to Cesar again tonight and Jazzelle is taking baby steps forward. She has smiled and is moving her arms a bit. The doctors are cautiously optimistic that their treatment plan will work. However they are a long way away from feeling comfortable with how things are going.

The doctors believe that this is an autoimmune disease and they have no concrete evidence on what has triggered this. The latest theory is that this may have been caused by her receiving vaccinations in preparation for school. Everything is coming back negative as far as bacteria and viruses are concerned. They continue to search for the exact autoimmune disease that is causing Jazzelle to be sick.

Jazzelle will be starting another two drugs by the end of the week. These drugs will basically kill off the mature and immature cells in her immune system and will leave only the "baby" cells. The doctors are hoping that this will erase the memory response that her immune system has learned due to the autoimmune diseases response to whatever the trigger was and reset her immune system. The doctors have told them that these drugs should work but they are very expensive. One of the two drugs is $20,000 per dose.

While the doctors are optimistic, nobody is sure of what the outcome will be. Jazzelle, Karina and Cesar continue to need our help.

Here is the latest update from Cesar from Wednesday:

The drug that they tried did not work and has in fact Jazzelle has gotten worse. All of their testing has come back within the normal limits or negative. They are still baffled by what is going on. They are continuing down the path that this is an autoimmune related issue and now have the Rheumatology team involved. They are currently testing to see if they can detect any type of markers in her blood that could be present in an autoimmune problem.

They are starting a process called Plasmaphoresis in which they basically scrub her blood and clean it of antibodies, proteins, certain cells and they will replace it with clean plasma and a few other nutrients. This is almost exactly like dialysis. They will be doing this every other day for a week or two. After that they hope to use another drug but they can’t administer that drug until the plasmaphoresis treatment is completed.

The theory is that Jazzelle had a virus of some sort and her body does not realize that the virus is now gone thus creating a hyper-reaction where her immune system keeps producing and modifying antibodies which are attacking her nervous system.

Cesar would like me to mention that they truly appreciate everything that everyone has done for them during this difficult time, and from the bottom of their hearts they thank everyone. It means the world to them that they have such supportive and caring people in their lives.

Please keep Jazzelle, Karina and Cesar in your prayers!
